PM Messages Stuck in Outbox

A number of PM messages that I have sent to people seem to be parked in my Outbox and I suspect they were never sent. Can anyone advise on what I can do to fix this?

From my understanding that typically just means they have yet to read the message, e.g. once read, it leaves your outbox after that.
