Unable to install ( Windows 10 )

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Unable to install ( Windows 10 )

Post by randallw »

I've spent parts of the last two days trying to install on a Windows 10 Home ( laptop, if that info matters or not ). When file extraction begins, the system burps because it is unable to access the uninstall file.

I saw mention of a DxWnd in another thread. I've never heard of it till now. Would using it make a difference?

Hi!

As far as your install goes, I cannot help you. In the past the game has had no installation issues that I'm aware of. Especially in Win 10. Other than ..... I do remember that in the day the game could cause some issues with it's default install location. It was found that it could be too long for some OS's.
Try installing it in something like C:Games\SPWAW\

DxWnd is a graphics wrapper that allows an Olde Timey game such as this to run seamlessly on a new OS. It's primary job is to windowise the selected program to any size you wish in it's proper 4:3 aspect ratio on a new 16:9 monitor. There is also a multitude of options available to tweak and fine tune your gaming experience. This diamond of a program is constantly being updated, and supported.
What DxWnd can do that is impressive (for us) is that it takes the original SW graphics and emulates them through your HW GPU using new and of course much improved graphic renderers.
Right now we find that using an OpenGL renderer, in concert with a Full Bilinear Filter gives the game a much fresher display.
- because you are now offloading the graphics from your CPU, everything speeds along a little bit faster. The artillery bombardments doesn't stutter, or pause. The small arms firing sequences zip along now. The game flows as it should.
- also, with adjustments in the Timing Tab you can now have the shimmering water details that the original game had. Admittedly a small thing.

Now, you don't need DxWnd to run the game, but IMHO it does improve the experience. YMMV.

If you are interested, I can update the instructions on setting up DxWnd.
(I am not affiliated to DxWnd in any way, other than being a fan of the product)

Don't forget to head over to the Depot - look at my sig - to download the patched files needed to run the game properly.
This fix sorts out the Artillery Screen, along with a few other sub-screens that could not function in a multi-processor environment and for a time crippled the game.
The patch has been D/L'd thousands of times without any reported issues form the end users. It is safe.
Matrix knows about it, and as far as I can tell .... they approve.

You can also find at the Depot a full install of SPWaW Enhanced, which is a cleaned up version (tidied up OOB's, new graphics, encyclopedia, associated support programs bundled in, plus other additions) that has also been D/L'd thousands of times now.
We can confirm that this works.

I hope this is of some help.

Cheers
