Land Icons
I know that the land icons show supply (light and dark color) but what do the icons with borders around them mean? Like a chinese icon is yellow but some have a thicker yellow border around them

Re: Land Icons
Light and dark colours are supposed to be clues to the size of the units - divisions vs smaller units.Enforcer wrote: Tue Feb 28, 2023 4:36 pm I know that the land icons show supply (light and dark color) but what do the icons with borders around them mean? My LCU icons are all round with an X through them - no square. What game version are you playing? The latest Beta 1127 (still incomplete)?

I was really wondering about the chinese icon that has the yellow border around the icon..

Re: Land Icons
Outside of a possible graphic mod, I've never seen a color border around a LCU icon. Is this type of icon border occurring in places outside of China?Enforcer wrote: Tue Feb 28, 2023 6:14 pm

Re: Land Icons
It's a mod looking at the map.
Re: Land Icons
Map looks like Bellum Pacifica mod that I have.
I have never seen that sort of unit borders, though.

Re: Land Icons
Could be more than one then.
Re: Land Icons
Pretty sure icons are from Skacee's graphics mod.

Re: Land Icons
Axe1999 is right. Here are stock and modded graphics compared. It is the second level in strength of a land unit.
Re: Land Icons
Resurecting an older thread, but this came up on a discord chat. The brightness of the LCU icons on the map seems not to be dependent on size, but rather the assault strength total of all the units in the hex. If the AV value is above at least 200 it seems to be a darker color than hexes with AV less than 200. I'm not sure if it also darkens for AV values above 100.
If you look at the two images in the link below, the 1st one has a dark icon with an AS of 264, while the 2nd one with the bright icon has an AS of 12.

[edit] That was disproved, color doesn't seem to relate to AV of units in the hex. Trying to figure out what triggers it.

Re: Land Icons
I’ve noticed this, too. Some Japanese LCU icons in Burma and the only one on Guadalcanal went from orange to red. I had 3 possible reasons:
- orange and red icons describe different branches of LCU, IJA vs IJN.
- supply status of the units changed from a good to a worse state (the unit on Guadalcanal had been cut off from supply and reinforcement for days, with several bombardments from sea and ground, when it went from orange to red)
- reinforcements increased the size of a unit, or losses shrunk it. Once again, the unit on Guadalcanal that went from orange to red has had only losses. Does red mean (as stated above) that assault strength is dangerously low?
Comments appreciated.

Re: Land Icons
I always figured the darker the national color on the icons be they for airfield, port or combat units, the greater the number of planes, ships or troops concentrated in that hex.

Re: Land Icons
Hmm, strange. Given that in my game the surrounded and isolated forces on Guadalcanal went from orange to red is confusing, then. I have four carriers and a battleship based TF preventing anything from landing. Is it maybe that I’m just getting better intelligence now that I’ve reconned them, and was given a low estimate of numbers before?Platoonist wrote: Thu Apr 25, 2024 12:35 am I always figured the darker the national color on the icons be they for airfield, port or combat units, the greater the number of planes, ships or troops concentrated in that hex.

Re: Land Icons
This is a quote on the subject from one the game's lead programmers in 2016.
However, in the same thread he also states that the system isnt always the best indicator.

Re: Land Icons
I did a bunch of testing and found that units changed colors if they moved from an urban hex to a grassland hex. I wonder now if there isn't any real significance to the color other than it changes for visibility sake? Makes it brighter against a dark background and dimmer against a light background hex color?Platoonist wrote: Thu Apr 25, 2024 7:24 pm This is a quote on the subject from one the game's lead programmers in 2016.https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 3&t=292829wdolson wrote: Fri Jan 29, 2016 11:32 pm All nationalities have three shades for ground units ranging from light for small units to dark for the largest units. Re: Land Icons
Apparently, going by all that has been said it's an indicator of the top-most land combat unit's size in the stack, subject to fog of war and detection level for enemy units. But what determines the order LCUs are stacked in a hex I don't know. Frankly, depending on the color of the land hex behind them how the colors appear can fool the eye too. Maybe that's why the Skacee art mod mentioned above uses borders and sizes instead of colors.Arkham wrote: Thu Apr 25, 2024 8:04 pm I did a bunch of testing and found that units changed colors if they moved from an urban hex to a grassland hex. Re: Land Icons
It's in the manual but hard to find.
Old 4.2.7, new 4.2.2. Basically it indicates the strength of the units based there. E.g AV for LCU, number of ac for airfields etc.

Nice find! I thought I had read something to that effect years ago, but just couldn't locate it again.Chris21wen wrote: Sat Apr 27, 2024 6:29 am It's in the manual but hard to find.

Re: Land Icons
So according to that, it may not be how strong the units are but also how many. That is one more way to confuse your enemy!Platoonist wrote: Sat Apr 27, 2024 11:01 amNice find! Re: Land Icons
So why are the same units light green when they are in a non base hex, but dark green if in a base hex?
