Unusual scenario oddities

Post by Will952 »

Playing a fairly unusual 1939 matchup where;
- The UK was invaded and conquered in a 1942 Sealion, with Cairo becoming the new capital
- The Finns were prevented from joining the Axis, and have now mobilised on the side of the Allies
- The Axis were driven out of North Africa as far as Benghazi
- The Allied navy has been almost completely destroyed and a large and powerful Axis navy roams the open seas
- Spain and North-West Africa (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco) are all in Axis hands
- USSR retains all three objective cities with a strong Soviet frontline along the Odessa/Kiev/Smolensk/Pskov axis
- The Allies invaded Turkey via Syria in 1943 to open up another front

It is now January 1944, I am Allies.

Two main things that strike me as odd:

1. The Finns entered as a minor of the UK. That means that although Finland is connected by rail to the USSR, it has a maximum of 5 supply, and cannot meaningfully fight in Soviet territory due to the supply rules preventing the UK fighting on Soviet territory. As such, there isn't really anything for the Finns to do and ironically it might've been more productive for me to simply invade Finland and conquer it as the Soviets. Suggestion: Make Finland a minor of the Soviet Union if it joins as Allies

2. When the UK relocates from the UK to Cairo after a successful Sealion, the US convoys to the UK stop, so there's no lever to increase the UK's (now much smaller) income. Suggestion: Allow US convoys to continue to the UK if it relocates to Egypt.

I am pretty sure this has come up before, the trouble is I just cannot see Finland in any way becoming an ally of the Soviet Union.

It should be the case that the US now has a convoy route to supply the USSR directly, as in terms of priority it might be wiser to keep the Soviet Union in the field than a weakened Great Britain?

Unfortunately the USA cannot have a convoy to both, nor is there really a viable way for them to be able to swap between one and the other, i.e. to send MPPs to the UK for a while, and then change to the USSR. It would be good of course, maybe one day.

It does sound like an interesting game, and that the UK over invested in Egypt to the expense of Britain itself?

Pretty much - I sent everything to Africa after 1941 on the assumption that if I did enough damage there he'd never have the resources to invade the UK - I was wrong!

Understood re the USA convoy.

I do think the Finnish issue is worth reconsidering, from a gameplay point of view if not a historical one. After all, this situation is only possible because all 3 allied nations maxed out their diplomacy on Finland - is it outside the realm of possibility that Finland could've teamed up with the Soviets under such a sustained (over years) charm offensive?
