Vid links incl. 1960 SAC Weps a/c separation distances

Post by Naz »

Further videos in the link from US NatSec Archive released 20Mar2023.
Declassified 1960 training video for US SAC bomber crews showing some planning. Poster on wall from ~ minute 21.30” shows separation distances for 3x different ordnance types.

Alt Above 30M Weps Mk28 Distance 10Nm
Alt Below 30M Weps Mk28 Distance 8Nm

Alt Above 30M Weps Mk15/39 Distance 17Nm
Alt Below 30M Weps Mk15/39 Distance 12Nm

Alt Above 30M Weps Mk36 Distance 27Nm
Alt Below 30M Weps Mk36 Distance 19Nm

Question for brains trust:
1. Altitude listed as ‘Above 30M’ and ‘Below 30M’. Would you assume this refers to ‘thousands of feet’, as opposed to ~100ft, or shorthand for a different altitude band due to board space?

Second video features:
“The film covers how to avoid enemy defenses and the use of glide path indicators (GPI) for emergency situations such as crash landing or bailout over enemy territory. Apparently, the information embedded in the overprint included details from “JCS SIOP charts,” but the film does elaborate. Also incorporating the latest intelligence is the Series 200 chart, a “vital” precision chart with current information on target location, topographic details, radar reflectivity, and other data to help find a target using radar or, in an emergency, visual means for low or high-altitude bombings.”

Despite everything saying to me that US measure altitude in feet not metres, the laydown delivery methods utilised during that period have swayed me to thinking that this is indeed metres... Certainly 1960's air defences are going to have a field day with B-52s at 30000' and up and survivability was supposed to be improved by flying nap of the earth for ingress, delivery (where a popup might be performed) and then a low level egress.
