Spanish Navy in Remember the Maine

Post by Duxgus »

The 1898 Remember the Maine scenario sould improve several technical aspects on Spanish fleet:
The Spanish cruisers Maria Teresa, Vizcaya, Oquendo and Cristobal Colon were armored cruisers and superior to the American protected cruiser, such as USS Baltimore, except for New York and Brooklyn. Cruiser Cristobal Colon lacked of her heavy guns when war began. The battleship Pelayo was better than Texas. Spanish destroyers, such as Terror, Proserpina, Furor, etc. were better and modern than American torpedo boats.

I would like to know why a protected cruiser as USS Baltimore and the rest of Asiatic Squadron are superior to an armored cruiser as Vizcaya, Oquendo, Infanta María Teresa or Carlos V.

The default-game does not really include protected cruisers (later light cruisers), only armoured cruisers (later heavy and battle cruisers), implying that both classes of ships are combined, as it were.

So in my home-made mod for both the 1898 and 1904 scenarios, I have specifically included a separate class of ship: the protected cruiser, using the older ironclad slot. The unit stats seem to reflect the two classes of ships, i.e., the protected and the armoured cruisers. For the 1898 scenario, a player could then very easily change an armoured cruiser to be rather a protected cruiser, thus differentiating the two classes more accurately.

As for the 3-D images, I have incorporated the SC World War I light cruiser sprites as protected cruisers for 1898 and 1904. They look great!
