I just saw someone post on a YT that when you suspect an enemy ship may be in port, you can use CTRL move to recon the port by moving next to it and then backwards. This can be done to avoid the "surprise" naval encounter and it can be performed by a sub or any ship (not sure about transports).

Thought the game was patched to remove coastal scouting like this? I had no idea people could do this to me lol. The AI certainly cannot avoid surprise attacks like this. Should this not be fixed?

Using the CTRL key while stitching waypoints with a submarine on 'Silent Mode' is very permissible. It's listed with other key commands in the manual.
In SC-WW1 it's highly recommended to use this while doing reconnaissance of the Adriatic ports for example. North Sea too, especially for German U-boats to scout or set up ambushes later.
I believe you posted this question here from a comment made by someone on one of my vids.
I had a Russian sub in silent mode but ran right into a raid hex on purpose knowing an Ottoman DD was probably sitting in the Port next to the red hexes.
The commentor thought he was teaching me that trick as I had AP left and could of sailed next to the Port and then out while in silent mode, thereby not getting surprised.
He was right...but I actually Wanted to end the turn in one of the two raid hexes next to Zongulak Port.
Anyways...that's what that is all about.
The only way to avoid a surprise is for a sub to be in silent mode and move away.
My sub actually took a hit from the suddenly revealed DD but there was no damage.

Yes your vid of course. Ok so this can only be done by silent subs? The comment said any ships?

Just ignore the WW1 specific stuff about mines.

It should however definitely not work for any other ships.

Using the CTRL key to plot naval movement paths is indeed normal, and passing by and possibly revealing a naval unit in port is by default as well.

This is the only exception to naval movement and possible surprise encounter as from early testing, going way back, it was felt to be unfair for the player that had their naval unit in port to possibly get dragged into a surprise encounter, and especially so if it took more damage than a player would have liked in the exchange.

Reason being is that ports by default can be expected to have naval units, e.g. while you can hide your fleet at sea on the map and sometimes get surprised when discovered, it should really not be of the same level of surprise that a naval unit would be in port.

Players may also have moved a naval unit there for repairs and so on.

The exception for now is if your opponent ends their move next to a port, then a surprise encounter may occur.

My pleasure and just to add one further clarification, there was also the annoyance of getting a surprise contact when sailing past a port for the player with their naval unit on the move, as that is where naval units are more or less expected to be, and thus the only surprise contact that occurs is when you finish your move next to the port.
