Soviet frigate Storozhevoy might make a unique scenario

Just reading more of the detail on this, I was struck that it might make a good CMO scenario.

Helion published a short book on this topic.

Yeah. I just ordered it. It seems a little better sourced than some of the sites I saw.

Doing some initial research I found you have to be careful with older source material on this incident. They had limited access to intel from both Russia and Sweden. Its when Swedish archives were opened that more detail came out about Soviet unit movements and NATO responses. The final disposition of a couple of the convicted sailors was also not consistent in early Western sources. I have the Helion book now and have just started reading it.

About halfway through the book. I can already see the difficult part of the scenario build is going to be the mistaken IDs and attacks on neutral and other Soviet ships. Poor comms will force multiple allied and neutral sides to be used to show those comm breakdowns.

Was it an urban legend or real that they seriously considered dropping a nuclear bomb on the frigate?

It wasn't confirmed exactly, but the standard loadout for a three-ship flight of Badgers was one with a nuke and two with conventional. Several in-the-know witnesses claim use of "special" weapons was authorized. The above mentioned book gives compelling evidence that only the fast thinking of the lead pilot avoided a nuke being fired.

I briefly started to make a scenario based on this, where the situation escalates, and there's Swedish involvement (like if the mutineers realize their chance of starting a revolution have collapsed and make a break for Sweden out of desperation)

I won't restart the effort, but I'd be happy to playtest someone else's scenario!
