3D map skins/mod?

I am wondering if there is already or is in progress a mod to the way the 3d map looks. Not to insult the dev by any means, I think it's a fantastic game but while the 2d map looks decent enough, the 3d map and especially the rough edges of the hexes make it so that it is very unappealing.
Otherwise might we know how to mod such a thing ourselves?

All the graphics files are in the Graphics folders.

You can adjust a terrain set but adjusting the 3D bmps. Everything is fully moddable!
