[WAD] 1328.5 Flight Tutorial 7 AAW 5 - AEW Not Classifying Contacts

Post by Horns »

As above - this is the 'Russian and Chinese Warplanes' tutorial, as run during current open beta (1328.5). AEW collects sensor data, but does not classify (either as hostile or as specific type) any contacts based on emissions or radar returns. This only occurs once unit has eyes on (ie Mk 1 eyeball). Have run this at least four times with the same behavior and outcome each time.

Please see save.

Zip file is corrupt according to windows and winrar.

edit...so you just changed a save file to a zip file by changing the extension? If you're going to do that, you should mention it.

The mainstay has no NCTR capability from what I can see. Plus the enemy aircraft are emcon passive so they can't even be easily classified until very close. Seems to be WAD from a functional perspective.

Apologies for wasting your time with the file name change, I forgot I'd done that, this site wouldn't let me upload a .save.

If it doesn't have NCTR then I guess that's fair enough, but shouldn't it at least classify the enemy mainstay that is emitting? Bogey #378, furthest East, 250 kts@36000...

I just reran the mission on 1307.18 and it played out the same way, so either way I guess it's not an issue with the open beta. When I ran through the tutorials the first time I thought I'd only scrambled fighters once I had enemy aircraft positively identified but I must have been mistaken.

Edit: Not that important, but please note the altitude on the friendly A-50: I'd left that at the default 36kft in the mission editor but it doesn't appear to follow that...

The other issue with your save is the Mainstay is already dead so I had to start from the beginning of the scenario.

edit: I launched the second Mainstay. The enemy AEW is over 300nm away with a radar that has only 250nm range. So the fact its detecting the radar, but not classifying it is most likely WAD. Its also 1908s/1990s vantage signal processing on top. ELINT isn't magic. There are still significant range limitations.

I would have launched a cap or escort with the Mainstay. Not only will it protect the AEW, but you'll have multiple ELINT sensors to help with detection. If you're crazy, you can send one of your stealthier jets forward to try to get classifications. If you are even more advanced, you can create prosecution zones with ROEs that force escorts and CAP to go out and proactively ID/classify aircraft at a set range. AFter that, you can start getting into jamming and tankers. But stay simple for now.

Please go ahead and close this. Guess I should have seen the need to manually mark contacts, I concede that the Schmel seems to be working correctly, and I'm not sure if the Mainstay's ESM should classify either. The altitude thing (mentioned in previous post) is neither here nor there, it's not functionally interfering. Sorry for the bogus report.

Edit: FWIW, Seems like range wasn't the issue with ESM classification. As in attached file (extension changed from .save to .zip) it won't classify even within 10nm, so I guess it's just a limitation of the tech. Like I say, please put a line through this one, cheers
