How to use DxWnd for SPWaW

Post by Major_Mess »

Probably best that we start a new thread.

DxWnd is a wrapper that allows old programs to be run on new OS's, in a window.

Download the latest version from https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/files/. that is currently V2.05.97.
Unpack the files to a folder, and then place the folder anywhere on your hard-drive ... other than the Desktop, or the Program Files folder.
FWIW, Mine is parked in my games folder.

- Open the folder and then create a shortcut to the desktop for the file : dxwnd.exe.
- double-click the shortcut, and you will now have a small empty window on your Desktop.
- Open the SPWaW folder, right click on the medh.exe file and drag it over and on top of the DxWnd window ...... then release.
- You should now have an icon of a hand grenade in DxWnd.

We're almost done!!!

- In the DxWnd window, go to Options and then click on "Expert Mode"
- Now, r/click the hand grenade, then l/click on "Modify". A new window appears.
Name field: Call it what you want
Generic > only check "Run in Window"
Position > check "Keep Aspect Ratio"
Window initial Position & Size > My screen is 1920 x 1080, so keeping a 4:3 ratio I set the W box at 1400 / H box at 1050
Fill the "Desktop work area" button.
Leave the rest blank

Move on to the DirectX tab.
DirectX Version Hook > use "Automatic"
Renderer > OpenGL
Filter > None
Fill in buttons for > "Async blit Mode" & "Full Bilinear filter"

This tab redirects the video display through the computers GPU, taking advantage of modern graphics renderers.

Last tab ....
Open GL > fill in "Hook OpenGL". I'm not sure if this last one is necessary, but it doesn't hurt to try it.

You don't need to worry about any of the other settings, the program creates a basic setup that works well out of the box for us.

That's it, you're up and running.
DxWnd is constantly being improved and upgraded. The forums are active and the Dev is very receptive to any and all queries.
You will also find an comprehensive Help File that is also up to date and very informative.

Now ............. if you're intrigued at all by the notion of improved graphics, but you are wary using another program ... you might be interested in this.

Here is a file specifically designed for SPWaW.
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... d#p4763526

Is another wrapper that is much less work to apply. Just drop the file in the game folder and away you go! It works.
No, you can't use the two together.

If you have any Q's at all, pleaes shout it out. I can maybe help you out.
cheers
