House Rules for AE Shorter Senarios and Quiet China?

Post by Titar »

Newbie, I halfway understand the HRs in the forum, but I am trying to get a better understanding of the why of why each is needed.

So, if I were playing anything other than the Grand Campaign, which HRs should still be considered?

For example, while some clearly no longer apply at all, are night missions still a concern if there is no strategic Bombing campaign? Is the restriction on 4E aircraft under 10K (or under 1K, skip-bombing I think?) still a possible concern if I don't have time to train naval attacks to a high value? Are worries about single unit TFs still a concern?

And how does this change for Quiet China (IHMO, I find this option more realistic due to coordination considerations, but to each their own!)

Not as interested in the definitive correct list, but which ones I should still consider and why.

Forget the quiet China scenario, just pull back from the enemy. That scenario has not been updated for at least a decade.

Two threads for house rules:

Well you won't need hr,s quite China scenarios. Most people won't play a pbem with quite China. But welcome to AE. HR's are a matter of taste. I play with a minimum of HR's....GP

Well, I view the game a much as a learning tool as a game, I play locally more often. But I wanted to better understand the logic behind the HRs for my own personal games. In the same way that you might want a historical game PBEM, I want to avoid gamey tactics in my personal games.

Also, I read the above threads, they all seemed to make the assumption you are playing the Grand Campaign. Still TY!

I believe the restriction on night bombing had to do with it often being far more effective in the game than in real life. Especially against airfields. In 1942, bomber crews were struggling to find blacked-out cities at night let alone bombing a specific airfield in that city.

As stated above, the (one) issue with Heavy bombers (or most level bombers, for that matter) that the HR is addressing is that they are way more effective than IRL.

The reason for this is that the game calculates each bomb (hit chance) separately, treating it as if each airplane was making a separate bombing run and aiming and dropping each bomb singly (instead of doing a 'formation drop' where everyone drops everything when the leader does & gets the hell out of Dodge as soon as they do). As you can imagine, statistically this will result in way more hits than what happened IRL during strat bombing. Or during any bombing run where enemy fighters or heavy flak was present.

It is not so much of an issue with dive bombers, torpedo or attack bombers (low level strafing/bombing attack runs) since they were meant to go after individual targets.
