There are many places in the game where there are undesired interactions with the background. This is one of them...
When choosing a component in ship designer, by clicking on an empty slot, when hovering about the list of components that is then shown, the info panel on the right isn’t the one for the component above which the pointer is in the list, but rather of the component below in the list of already chosen components (those that are already part of the design).
The screenshot below shows some of the component of the default design for the heavy destroyer in my current game. I wanted to replace the PD in the size 39 weapon slot (green oval) and replace it with a medium shatterforce beam. Notice the position in the list of the Talassos Shields that are already part of the design (green arrows).

So I right-clicked on the size-39 slot to get rid of the PD, and then left-clicked to access the list of available components for that slot. I hovered above the medium shatterforce beam. And the info panel then displayed on the right, instead of showing the specs of the shatterforce beam, is showing those of the Talassos Shields. Which, remember, are in the list below, the list of the components that are already part of the design.

For an experienced player, this is a minor annoyance (annoyance nevertheless
). But I imagine that for a new player, that could be pretty confusing!
