Tankers have a 'death wish' (1.1.6.7)

Post by scotten_usa »

I've seen this happen a number of times. I think it happens most with space monsters but I can't be 100% sure.

I've ordered the 5th Fleet to this gas giant, and then get notified that a gravillex is there and some ship is under attack. I order the fleet to attack this beast and find my tanker is still cruising to the planet right near the monster (and not immediately diverting course). I'd think it should escape/retreat?

It will only do what the behavior settings tell it to do. If it isn't supposed to retreat until attacked, then it will do exactly that.

Hey thanks for the report.

After looking at the save, it doesn't seem like this is a bug. I've looked at the fuel tanker's tactics settings and it is set to retreat when attacked. This means that it'll maintain its course and mission and only change things up if it is directly targeted by a threat. I let the save play a bit and the Gravillex does indeed attack the fuel tanker and as soon as it does the tanker gets the "escape from here" mission. Seems to be working as intended.

Interesting. I'd prefer a support ship "fleet from possible enemy" rather than possibly get attacked and possibly disabled from an enemy or monster.

The easy fix for that is to set the tanker's tactics to flee "when enemy is nearby" or even "enemy at this location".

You can set this individually for each ship (if you want some tankers to behave differently) or you can set it as the default behavior for all tankers. To do the latter, simply go into your fuel tanker's design screen (edit design) and there is an area at the top of the screen that lets you adjust the default behaviors for that ship type.

I do this all the time for exploration ships. Their default is "flee when attacked", which gets a lot of early-game ships killed by pirate bases and such. Setting the design default to "flee when enemy nearby" or "enemy at same location" makes my ships bug out as soon as they detect the threat rather than wait to eat a few torpedoes first.
