Horrible AI retreat choices

Post by havoc1371 »

My confederate division was attacked from the hex directly north of its position at the green circle and retreated to the hex with the red circle, despite open clear hexes to its rear and no other visible enemy. Why does the AI still make such obviously bad choices? That the algorithm thinks retreating horizontally along the front line is better than back behind their own lines in clear hexes?

It was subsequently destroyed by my opponent as it was an easy kill, which is why I had to use a red circle.

Maybe the AI code is channeling Hitler's no retreat directives from the WW2 games? Or Stalin's Order No. 227---Not one step back?

Seriously, lateral retreats come across as a weird compromise. Either retreat backwards or stand and die.

Thanks for the report, there is definitely at least one issue with units that are attacked with their start position on a 'Land + Sea' hex when it comes to retreats.

I'll correct this for the next update.
