Game resolution

Eagle Day to Bombing of the Reich is a improved and enhanced edition of Talonsoft's older Battle of Britain and Bombing the Reich. This updated version represents the best simulation of the air war over Britain and the strategic bombing campaign over Europe that has ever been made.

Game resolution

Post by Cardolam »

Greetings,

As someone thinking about buying this game - and a previous long time owner and player of other GG titles - what is the resolution this game plays at?
My native resolution is the today's standard 1920 * 1080 and I shudder just to think I have to play it on a 1024 * 768 small window in the middle of my monitor...
Also, is this game compatible with Windows 10/11?

Thank you very much for the info.

Yep, it's 1024 x 768. You can run it in full-screen mode using dxwnd in Win10/11 with a little fiddling, or just set your desktop resolution to something more bearable like 1280 x 800 and run it in windowed mode so that the window will fill most of the screen.

Should you buy it? Well...
  • The graphics are horrid, and although improved from the original, there's only so much that can be done with XGA bitmaps.
  • The user interface is a misery.
  • The messaging system during turn resolution is awful -- there used to be third-party tools to assist, but they haven't been updated in a while and don't work with the latest updates.
In conclusion, the game is fantastic, and it's incredible that it is still being updated. I'm always coming back to it, especially when a new update drops. It offers a unique depth and historicity to the air war that none of the other titles, including WITW and WITE2, can provide, and it does it well.

Interesting spin on the sh*t sandwich marten 77. :D
1280x1024 would be closer to what you want if running in windowed mode.

Compared to what it was in 2009, EDBTR has come a long way, but like marten77 says the graphics and UI are dated.

One of the primary goals of the post-release updates has been to improve the UI for raid planning and allow more interaction with the extensive database by the player. Along with that came a slew of fixes to the code and data and improvements to the AI to make the game function as the original designers intended.

For what its worth, I don't think the graphics are so bad and the UI is far more user-friendly compared to the original. So while it may represent a world of difference to the players of the original, the appearance may disappoint those looking for a shiny, modern looking simulation of the Battle of Britain and the Strategic Bombing Campaign in Europe.

Thank you both for your help.

As someone who still plays strategy games from the 80's (yes, you read it well!) I don't care for the graphics at all but instead for the gameplay. I got the battle of britain at the time of the original release and enjoyed it thorougly.

For someone with technical expertise in IT I believe it is not hard to configure this dxwnd to run it in full screen mode? Can you confirm this?

Again, thank you!

I was buying Avalon Hill wargames at Toys R us in the '70's. Ahhh, yes those were heady days my friend.

Dxwnd install is easy (just download and unzip it somewhere) and the Matrix patches come with the EDBTR configuration file.

Well, I am 51, so by the late '70s I would be loving RISK and Stratego... but a decade later I played all kinds of complex strategy games, until today! ;)

Thank you very much for the help... and for the memories.
