Subs on fleet support aren't particularly helpful

Rule the Waves III is a simulation of naval ship design and construction, fleet management and naval warfare from 1890 to 1970. and will place you in the role of 'Grand Admiral' of a navy from the time when steam and iron dominated warship design up to the missile age.

Subs on fleet support aren't particularly helpful

Seems like if you pick fleet support for your subs, they don't do much of anything. I was expecting torpedo attacks against the enemy's ships at least once or twice?

Subs against warships become useful only after missile subs are invented. Otherwise if you have more than 100 of them they are very useful in the unrestricted mode.

Yeah, that's what I do, I put them on unrestricted and let them ravage the enemy's shipping.

Historically, the US Navy's subs in WW2 did a whole lot of damage to the Japanese Navy. Note Table II in https://www.history.navy.mil/research/l ... -wwii.html. Submarines were the second-leading cause of losses to IJN naval vessels, at 540K tons, behind carrier-based air at 711K tons but well ahead of surface ships at 277K tons. I'd say in game terms the US Navy's submarine fleet in 1941-45 was on "unrestricted" mode but still got a lot of kills of IJN ships, both escort craft and major combatants. The largest single IJN ship to be sunk was the CV Shinano at 68K tons, sunk by USN submarine Archerfish.

It would be really nice if the game treated submarines the same as surface ships, with their own level of detail and effectiveness in battle.

You can still have some ships taking torpedoes during strategic phase. (Like the ones hitting mine).

The US sub campaign against japan was effective.( At least, once they managed to fix their torpedoes, which took 1/2 years  ), but it was very special circonstances.
Japan lacked the technology to fight subs and greatly underestimated the threat until it was too late.

And right after I posted this, one of my subs torpedoed two enemy ships during an action.

I still want to have more control over my subs' behavior during missions. At least the ability to assign them operating areas when setting up the scenario, like search zones for airbases.
