Radiation Consequences

Let's say I have a bunch of heavy tanks with atomic engines toodling around in a hex having fun....and then some of them get blown up. Will the exploded tanks cause the radiation level in the hex to go up and by how much? Does it scale with the number of damaged vehicles? Should there even be any radiation damage at all?
