Ships Question

Post by TercioNapoli »

Hi guys

How would I access the *.nqp file. Am I supposed to open it with Wordpad and modify data in there directly or is this file accessed somewhere in-game in the equipment editor?

If I make a ship under "Spare Equipment" how/where does an *.nqp file get generated?

Also, any ideas why my 16th Century Galleon doesn't show "this equipment has an anti-shipping capacity..."?:

Try setting the firing range to 5 kilometers and see if the anti-shipping capability is then present.

See section 19.9 in the manual. You may also want to read section 19.8 in that same manual.

Also, as I advised in the manual, when editing equipment, don't start from scratch - you're sure to get something mucked up. Start with a copy of something as close to what you're making as possible. So...for a ship, start with a copy of another ship.

Sound advice.

Also, recommend that before you begin editing, try building a spreadsheet. Ships on the left and ship attributes across the top. Using an existing ship as the starting point, build your fleet so you can see the relative strength/weakness between ship classes. This should give you a reasonable idea of results when you get to testing. Adjust seasoning as required.

Thanks guys for the response, much appreciated.

I will try the 5km range good idea!, I did actually come across this examining other era specific scenarios, but figured as galleons didn't have a 5km range the creator did that to be able to fire inshore - so discounted it and set mine at 2km for the same task (actual range was only 400m or so).

Thanks for pointing out the right chapters in the manual, I feel like a numpty now. I have a bound hard copy printed on my desk, I use it as a reference as well, but it's a substantial document with a good volume of info so going through it piecemeal. I actually started reading it some time ago following other posts being directed to the manual, now I find myself directed there as well! :D

I initially did an Excel on all units (infantry, artillery, ships, auxiliary) - the ships comparison/buildup/balancing kept me so engrossed I even started having dreams at night about the different ship types and sorting through the cannons. I have also referenced equipment data from other pre-WW1 scenarios for the period (Pax Hispanica and the Wars of Religion most notably) in the Excel as a guide, but still found myself balancing quite a bit.

OK, so the 5km worked - now showing anti-shipping. Again thanks for that suggestion.

I studied Section 19.8 & 19.9 in the manual, but Section 19.9 refers to ACOW editor and BioEd (linking new lines to weight parameter) using the Yamato class as an example. I've looked for these online, it appears the BioEd link in the "How To Edit Equipment Database" PDF was taken offline on 5 September this year. Would there be any new link to use the BioEd? - or would there be another way to link the weight parameter between *.eqp and *nqp files?.

A few things that seem to complicate matters in figuring our "how to" on the above:
- The "alternative version" picture of the *.nqp in the manual (page 168) seems to be the same picture as shown for the "vanilla" file. There's a description to the alternative, but not supported visually
- The "alternative" file doesn't seem to be in the Graphics Override folder as suggested either
- A "scenario specific" *.nqp file is then described referencing the "above" Okinawa 1945.nqp - however the picture above it shows a "Baltic Fleet" detail

You don't need the BioEd. That illustration only showed a method of doing it. Any editor - the built-in editor included - will suffice. (The 19.9 text was written before that editor was made).
A few things that seem to complicate matters in figuring our "how to" on the above:

It does seem that those files have disappeared. But, they are fully described in the manual. It's the description that matters. The Alternative version is different from the vanilla version in the speeds of the ships.
- A "scenario specific" *.nqp file is then described referencing the "above" Okinawa 1945.nqp - however the picture above it shows a "Baltic Fleet" detail
That's a bust in the manual. Someone reused the shot from section 19.8 and lost the shot that was meant to be there. However, you can find a copy of the Okinawa 1945.nqp in the scenario-specific folder for the Okinawa 1945 scenario.
