"Do Not Shoot" command

Rule the Waves III is a simulation of naval ship design and construction, fleet management and naval warfare from 1890 to 1970. and will place you in the role of 'Grand Admiral' of a navy from the time when steam and iron dominated warship design up to the missile age.

"Do Not Shoot" command

Post by thedoctorking »

It would be really handy if you could have a general "do not shoot" command that would apply across your force. This is especially important for torpedoes, because of course if one of your stupid AI controlled destroyers shoots at a disabled enemy ship that is in the middle of your formation and misses, it could easily hit one of your own guys. More than once, I've had to swerve a formation away from their ideal course because some bonehead that was on AI (where you can't give "no torpedo" orders) fired at a crippled enemy ship.

And also, how can you miss an enemy ship that is 500 yards away from you and dead in the water? Assuming that you would want to shoot at a target that was dead in the water.

Maybe a complementary command "priority target", so your guys will concentrate on that enemy ship if they have a reasonable shot (more than X% chance of a hit). And of course, the AI would also use this, deprioritizing your ships that aren't moving, firing their weapons, etc. in preference to your ships that pose an active threat, prioritizing the biggest threat around.

I've been saved more than once by the AI pouring fire into one of my crippled ships while their squad-mates decamp in peace.

Here's another example. The Bismarck division has been ordered to fire on the one remaining Brit BC that is still moving and probably getting away. This has been the case for about ten minutes, while the surviving BC has been massacring my torpedo boat CLs that got his two buddies. Who are the Bismarcks firing on? One of the dead in the water and not shooting BCs. I'm sure the Tiger is happy, but I'm pretty frustrated.

I think the targeting AI could use a boost in general - for example, the main battery guns of the lead division often change their chosen target whereas I'd expect it to be more a case of pound one target into silence.

But I'd also expect them to target ships that appear dead in the water as a precaution - just because it's not moving doesn't necessarily mean it's sinking. Same with sticking a torpedo in to the target even though its immobile - keeps the enemy honest and ensures the ship is sinking.

As for the torpedo hits - remember, the ship outlines are not to scale - they are massively oversized.
