Sea mines and ocean depth

Rule the Waves III is a simulation of naval ship design and construction, fleet management and naval warfare from 1890 to 1970. and will place you in the role of 'Grand Admiral' of a navy from the time when steam and iron dominated warship design up to the missile age.

Sea mines and ocean depth

Post by thedoctorking »

Is there a limit in this game to how deep the ocean can be where sea mines are deployed? I know there was some use of drift mines in WW1 and 2, but I think they were generally considered a nuisance rather than effective and otherwise moored or bottom mines can only be laid in water depths 100m or less.

I guess not - just opened up a scenario where we're fighting north of Corsica, and my guys laid minefields in water that is like 2000+ meters deep. That's a whole lot of mooring cable!

Yeah, as far as I know, RtW doesn't have any simulation of ocean depth. It's all just "water deep enough for warships to operate in"

A valid point, but it would have been complicated to check the water depths all over the globe. Instead, minefields will primarily occur near bases and coastal artillery. But admittedly, in some cases they appear in unlikely places.
