Looks like a distant noise from just the right angle could really scare the heck out of some cows.

Well the focal point for the gathered sound would be at the top of that steel post in front of the dish - that's where the microphone would have been. Beyond that point, the sound waves spread out again in a mirror pattern to the dish shape.

BTW, I saw this exact photo when I was a very small child and I thought these were very powerful artillery guns.
