upgrading MG to QMG?

I want to massive upgrade MG to QMG but I found that it's not on the upgrade list so I can't upgrade. Do I have to replace them manually?

QMGs can't be upgraded, but need to be replaced.

QMG is an annoying unit since it can only be autoreplaced and old MGs will have to be scrapped manually.

You don't need to replace them manually.

Let's say you want to upgrade 1000 MG. You build 1000 QMG as replacement troops. Then in management>model you set the quality level of MG to something that is tolerated (means it will stay into the formation until something else is available) or disallowed (means everything is sent back to the SHQ even if there aren't enough QMG to replace them) by your MG units. Next turn the SHQ will try to replace as many MG by QMG as it can with the remaining logistics.

Spoiler alert: if it's not laser QMG it will certainly cripple your logistics. Ballistic QMG can weight more than 1k worth of logistic points per sub unit.
