QOL/Touchscreen

Post by JagdFlanker »

hey Vic;

I blew out my mouse hand and can't use a mouse for very long anymore, so I changed over to a touch screen (ASUS 15" 2k Zenscreen), and to my surprise SE is actually not far away from being a full touch screen game

*IF* you were interested in making the game fully touch screen compatible, the sliders/arrows are a little bit too small to accurately use on a 15" screen (unfortunately the biggest screen you can buy without a stand) so they might need to be scaled up a little

Also it might be nice to be able to scroll the map by using the touch screen (like Google maps). The zoom in/out by pinching works fine currently

One thing that would be nice if it were fixed is the tabs on the left and right sidebars - if I hit a tab on the left/right sidebars 2 times in a row (always by accident), it causes the sidebar to hide, and then I have to press it again to make it un-hide, which is a pain. There is already a dedicated button to hide the sidebars, having them hide and un-hide by pressing a tab twice seems redundant, especially since the bottom bar does not have this same behaviour

Thanks!

When I try to use 'Quick Planet Generation' in 'generation settings' I'm finding the 'fog of war' options to be confusing. i would like to be able to preview the map before the game starts, and then start the game with the map blacked-out, but it doesn't seem possible

I am assuming that 'Complete' FOW means the map is completely blacked-out, while 'Partial' means you see the map, but you don't see what's going on unless your units can see it

When i pick 'Quick Planet Generation' there seems to be no way to be able to preview the map unless you pick Partial:

If you click on Complete/Complete after Colonization/Know Map Otherwise Complete, the entire preview map is blacked-out before you start the game

if you click on Partial you do get to preview the map, however when you start the game the map is not blacked-out

It would be nice if when using 'Quick Planet Generation', clicking on Know Map, Otherwise Complete would allow you to preview the map before you start the game, and then once you start the game the map goes full black-out

Perhaps a new option (or alter Complete after Colonization when 'Quick Planet Generation' is picked) previews only the "physical" map without knowing where any of the regimes are, while Know Map, Otherwise Complete shows you exactly the map as you are about to play it with regime borders shown. And in both of these cases, after you start the game the map is completely blacked-out

Thanks!

leaders that used a skill recently have a * next to the skill which over time helps to figure out what skills a leader uses for their position, however what would be even more helpful for new players is if when a leader takes a position, ALL their skills turn grey (or whatever looks good to you) EXCEPT for the skills that are used for their position.

for example used INT skills would be green, unused would be grey - but perhaps changing the colour of the text could work as well, depending on what's easier to modify

For example the SHQ commander would have all skills greyed out, except 'trade' would stay green and 'high command' would stay blue. Foreign Affairs would have all skills greyed out, except 'Diplomacy' and 'Oratory' would remain yellow

Also, I relieved my SHQ commander to replace them with another leader, but next turn when I go to choose a new SHQ commander that same leader is on top of the list - if anything that leader should be at the bottom of the list since I just fired them

In the MNG/Leader tab I find I am looking at either leaders that I have employed, or the reserve pool - but rarely both

Perhaps it would be handy at the top of the screen next to the 'reset' button there was 2 toggles (or tabs), 1 for 'staff' or 'employed', and another for 'reserve pool' so it's easy to switch back and forth, or you can toggle both on. Perhaps this is handier on a touch screen like I use, since having to hit those tiny words on the side is usually tricky and I constantly have to reset things when I look at leaders

things for new players can be overwhelming for new players at first so I think it might be very helpful for them if organizations had more helpful start game default 'priorities' than the current default settings

of course this is a matter of opinion, but For example at game start it is more practical to have military/airforce research and model design councils to be at 95% research and 5% discovery, because if you are not researching anything those BPs go to discovery anyways, and otherwise if you decide to research something you might as well put everything into research. Experienced players will change things to how they want it regardless, otherwise to keep it simple for newcomers the only time you really need to change research from 5%/95% is when you hit the optimization techs later on

You could do a poll and let the players choose the exact numbers if you want, but I can suggest:
Economic - discovery 5% / research 45% / prospecting 20% / econ policies 20% / MTH 10% (add MTH to research if no DLC)
staff - Discover 5% / operationalize 35%/ occupation 20% / postures 20% / customize 20%
military/airforce research/model design - discovery 5% / research 95%

And finally a couple small details:
when selecting things on the 'orders' tab on the RHS like 'trade' or 'workshop', the button on the bottom says 'cancel', which is not the right word to use since it's a button to exit the screen, and not actually cancelling anything. Consider renaming it to 'Back', 'Exit' or 'Close' since that is more accurate

The word 'ammunition' is already plural since it implies more than 1 weapon munition
