"Earth loses gravity. Details at 11:00"

Post by larryfulkerson »

I've been lurking for several weeks now and I went through the [AAR] of GreyJoy and Rader until they discovered so many scenario bugs that play had to be delayed several times while Michael did his magic to fix it etc. Since then I've downloaded the #33 scenario, the adjusted scenario #1 that Andy M. produced and thought I'd test it out playing against the AI and see what happens. After I loaded the scenario and clicked on start the game it launched immediately into the Command phase and I watched the replay. Here's what it looked like during the first Pearl Harbour attack:

Here's what the PI looks like now. I see some mine layers loitering around Bataan Island and I'll need to watch them for what Elmer does with them.

Elmer landed at Kota Bharu last night and launched an assault but didn't quite capture the base. He probably will today.

Here's the destroyed aircraft available for PP's and I'd like to redeem those Kingfishers but I really don't need them bad enough right now to buy them. I'd rather replace the bad commanders of the various aircraft squadrons as a first priority.

Here's a list of the best pilots I have and so far the experience for my best pilots is in the 60's and that's not quite good enough for any serious combat yet. I've got to get my training squadrons going full blast. I'm looking forward to the time when Boyington shows up. He and Richard Bong. Some of the best friends I've never met.

Here's some of the best ships I have and now they are sitting on the bottom of the harbour. I'm not sure if Elmer is going to do another strike but I see he has his CVTF's still within range so I'm tempted to think that for sure there's going to be more carrier strikes scheduled.

I've got only 56 days to get the AP Dominion Monarch to Colombo so I can withdraw it from the game else I'll be charged 20 PP's each day it's late. It's got engine damage but it's still able to make 17 knots each day and that's plenty. Truth be told it probably won't make it there because of the dangerous Jap aircraft scanning the sea lanes this close to Malaya and the west coast of Vietnam.

I've decided to go through all the bases and AF's and set the appropriate stockpiling so that they all have at least 10K supplies and 10K fuel at the base. For those bases that have refineries I want to turn on the stocking for oil. And if any base already has at least 10K I want to start the expansion of ports or airfields as appropriate. Those bases that will soon be captured I want to start the expansion of the forts to make the Jap take down at least a little bit harder if possible.

I've sorted this list of squadrons by morale and I notice that almost all the Allied aircraft have a low morale and I had to scrowl down fairly far before I found one with a morale over 59 so I've stood down the entire force and will assign missions to those of 60+ morale. It will be easier that way as I have to do them all eventually.

I've started going through all the squadrons and this is the first one that has a morale higher than 59 so I'm going to put it on 100% training with a range of 0 and an altitude of 5K for now. When I start training them on straffe they will drop down to 100 feet. As I'm checking these squadrons I'm checking for the number of pilots in the squadron making sure that there is at least enough for the number of aircraft and making sure that there's at least 2 extra pilots for resting and a short R&R downtown each weekend. As long as they refrain from starting any fights at the Hilton Hotel. A couple of instances of "hillarity" has already happened just two weeks ago. EDIT: Also, I'd like the squadron leader to have at least 60 in aggression if possible. I'll see how far 150 PP's can go for that.

From what I understand the PBY-5 upgrades to the PBY-5A eventually but I've looked at the upgraded version and I've decided that the old version is the better version. The PBY-5A has regular landing wheels so it can land on runways as well as the water but that makes is heavier and slower and with a shorter range. So I'll keep the older versions thank you very much.

There's a PBY group at Bataan (VP-102) that has the ability to snoop several Jap airfields the sea lanes to the north to as to be able to give early warning of approaching Japs. They have but 5 pilots so only 5 planes can depart each time. So I've placed 4 lanes to search and 1 pilot can go to the O club and get blind drunk.

At Soerabaja there's a Dutch GVT-11 ( for float patrols ) and I don't believe I need it for anything so I'm going to move the pilots to the reserve and disband this bad boy. I'm missing some Dutch pilots in other squadrons and I'd rather have all my fighter squadrons fully manned just now.

There are three aircraft squadrons at Darwin and one of them, the No.12 squadron, is flying Wirraway's and I've set them to look around for Jap ships and attack them upon contact. I haven't looked at the other two squadrons and I may have to move both of them to better positions.

The CMs at Batan Island are convoy escorts.

It seems to work better for your search aircraft when you don't set search arcs and don't search over 12 hexes. They will have a chance at detecting TFs within 4 hexes no matter the range that is set.

Fill your training units with extra pilots and don't bother to rest them for the weekends. Set the training to 100% and range to 0. Early in the game, harvest as needed knowing that they may not be all that skilled but they can be good enough defensively against non-KB fighters. Pappy is an Army pilot who is actually a mercenary in the AVG and never become a marine pilot. There are other things to do with your fighter trainers later but you can't do it yet.

Yes, the PBY-5 upgrades to the PBY-5A but you won't have enough of either one for awhile. Use up your older versions* before upgrading to the latest and greatest. Also, use your older aircraft for training.

For units in combat, give them extra aircraft so when some need to be pulled for maintenance, they aircraft in Reserve can be used. Also, if there are losses then you already have some aircraft already there. Always give the units reserve aircraft before giving the replacements otherwise you can't give them the reserve aircraft.

Set your Dutch aircraft to training. Decide now if you want your Dutch bombers to use Low Naval or Regular Naval bombing. I have sunk IJN CAs with 300kg bombs from B-10s, 500lbers will also work. Low Naval carriers fewer bombs but is much more accurate and prone to be hit by light AA weapons while Naval bombing at higher altitudes may be out of reach for those guns but you may not hit anything.

Use your PT Boats in proper weather and/or moonlight and they can be devastating, especially getting Japanese merchant ships to play bumper ships.

*This includes aircraft, squads, artillery, tanks, and AA guns, especially the Commonwealth ones.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are missing! :o

Thank you very much RangerJoe dude. Really valuable tips and things I hadn't thought of and for reminding me about building some PT boats and putting the extra pilots in the training squadrons is outstanding. I'll make it so right away.

I thought I'd go through all the bases and set the stockpiling aiming for at least 10K supplies and 10K of fuel in the more important of them. And I've got to get the Chinese moving and the stuff in the USA that I'm going to ship to Pearl need to be moved to a convient port and there's some troops in AUS that need to be moved to Sydney etc. It's already 19:11 here in Tucson and I suspect that I'll be working through the night again. I don't mind it's all fun.

You are welcome.

There is also a way to use most of your Australian Light Horse, CMF Militia, CMF Infantry squads without having to wait for them to upgrade in the stockpiles. I did almost all of the CMF Infantry squads but I made an error on those, the Light Horse keep coming so there will be a stockpile of those unless some are lost in combat.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are missing! :o

I've got the 10th Light Horse Bat. Armoured Unit commanded by LTC Gardner, P. headed for Sydney, AUS from Geralton, AUS and it should arrive within a week. But I don't seem to be able to find "CMF Militia" nor unit "CMF Infantry squads" any where. I searched Tracker as well and Tracker has never heard of them. They don't seem to be in the "coming reinforcements list" etc. So I'm forced to ask you where I might find them please sir.
