Is there a WITP2 coming at some point?

Post by DeZanic »

I am fantasizing that WITP2 would be coming sooner or later but I am not sure. Is there any hope that WITP2 would be coming?

This game basically is WITP2. The original War in the Pacific came out in 2004. WITP Admirals' Edition in 2009.

However, for an eventual WITPAE2 the overwhelming consensus that I've read on this board is no. The game engine is simply too old. The original development team has long moved on. A ground-up rewrite of everything would be necessary and the return on investment would likely not be there. Megagames like this are a real niche market to begin with. At this point even the last promised patch to WITPAE seems to be becoming a mini epic in terms of development time. Plus, if somehow started today a successor game would be many years from completion if ever.

What is find kind of odd is that there really hasn't been an effort to remake the game from someone. I know there are some mods out there for the maps, ships, planes, etc. and I think the "beta" is actually the closest thing to continued development. But you think about some of the old games that are out there that get complete overhauls and remasters. Games like the old Star Wars X-Wing from 1993 or Sins of a Solar Empire. I can't imagine AE is more complicated in terms of coding than the new X4 games that are out there. Perhaps its just too niche?

Exactly. I've read a lot of comments from players in the War Plan and Strategic Command forums who are interested in the Pacific War but who say they pass on WitPAE because they find the level of detail or time commitment far too daunting. Tournament players especially aren't going to want to have much to do with a game where it takes years to rack up a sizable win-loss record. Plus, it's a mismatch. Japan generally loses.

And anything Star Wars is usually guaranteed to have a huge built-in audience likely insuring a return on investment. (Less so if it has Jar-Jar Binks in it.)
