Unit size & Planet Development

Post by solops »

Has anyone ever developed a planet enough to field formations composed of division sized units?

I've used corps a fair bit, but not yet army size formations.
In general the bigger formations are great for concentrating your combat power - better to have one corps than three brigades concentrated in the same place. Independent regiments/divisions are useful for much the same reason - it can make sense to use them instead of multi unit formations to get the concentrated shock needed for amphibious assaults for example.
That said the nature of the map you are playing on has a major impact on the size of formations you're going to be able to field. The map I am currently on, a moderately sized Cerberus class, there just aren't enough people for big formations. My entire military only numbers about 55,000 and can't be made larger without collapsing my economy. As a result, deploying an army size formation would involve putting my entire military in one place which isn't an option for obvious reasons.

I think to really get use out of army size formations you're gonna have to play on a relatively green world that has a big population. A big Siwa, Gaia or Hydra class maybe.
