An issue w/ the SC series

Post by brettwjohnson »

I am a huge fan of the *original* Strategic Command and wish it still worked. The next generation which abandoned hexes for squares was a huge let-down. Thankfully, the series has returned to hexes (or I wouldn't even consider it).

However, I still find I don't like the newer games as much as the original... Why? They are better in almost every way, but...

They are simply too big to be manageable/fun (for me). Which leads me to 2 suggestions:
1) I would like to see a few games using the system with *much* smaller & more focused maps. BIGGER is not always better...
2) For the bigger maps, the game needs an computer assistant, so you don't have to OCD scan every unit & map location.
2a) Recommend units and/or areas that need attention (e.g., a severely wounded unit or unit that is cut-off/almost-cut-off)
2b) Designate a computer general for certain zones, fronts and allow the player to focus only on the most critical/interesting area. Computer general could be set to offensive/defensive/balanced.
2c) technology/build recommendations
2d) All of these should be optionally enabled/disabled on a turn by turn basis.

Using SC:WW2 as an example... I would love to delegate the Balkans to the computer, while I focus on crushing France/Russia. North Africa might be delegated to computer in some games or human controlled in others.

Thanks for the feedback, and the DLC for this game, our WWI game and our (yet to be released) Pacific game do include smaller and more focused campaigns that are probably more in line with your preferences, in addition to the larger scale maps.

Delegation is possible in some of our games, in that friendly Majors can be assigned to the AI. However, in the ACW with only one Major a side it isn't possible.

@Brett --- Hey buddy, we had some good times with the original SC-1. But come on, that's when internet gaming, really began. You couldn't even return trip from Egypt with transports. The excitiment was more around meeting other gamers & people around the world with the same interest. Now, Forums are monitored like George Orwell's 1984. Agree, the Tile Era games were a flop, but hey, that's also gone, 15 years ago.

The SC-WaW is the crown jewel of gaming. I'll probably keep playing it to my grave, long as there is opponents. I haven't played the SC-Europe, but there's plenty of diehards who swear by it.

Far as the US Civil War flavor, I like the Western theater, the action is great. The East, well, not so much. Haven't played in awhile, but I'm guessing the players have helped calibrate the balance. It's not easy to make Civil War games be balanced, because the South really had no chance.

This latest Pacific version, I haven't tried, but I will probably after the Summer is over.

Also rememeber, I paid $80 for my 3rd tank of gas this week to fill my truck. So if I dump on a game I don't like, I'll get over it. Not like I'm buying a house for a video game.
Slaps issued: 16 - Patton, Dana White, Batman, Samson. Medals/Salutes given: 6, warnings received: 11, suspensions served: 4, riots: 2.

Being able to delegate an entire power is ok, but...

Would still like ability to delegate a front and/or perhaps set HQs to AI behavior. It actually makes a lot of sense if HQs could act independently...

I'll probably buy Pacific, but keep my feedback in mind... I don't like having to OCD scan every unit/location...
