This is not entirely accurate.
There were actually TWO ships named Roma.
- Italian battleship Roma (1940)
- SS Roma (1926)
When Second World War broke out, she was acquired by the Navy for Conversion to aircraft carrier name Aquila.
So, there was no plan in the works to convert the Italian Battleship Roma -> Aquila Aircraft Carrier.Work on converting Roma into an aircraft carrier began in earnest at Cantieri Ansaldo, Genoa, in November 1941. Since a battleship named Roma was already under construction, the ship's name was changed to Aquila.
