CMO vs Modern Naval Warfare the new kid on the block !

Post by JohnWise »

Hi all,

What's members view of Modern Naval Warfare or MNW as were starting to call it now ? I know it's been a long time in
the development stage but I'm wondering from all the promotional video's, whether this is CMO with "the Eye Candy"
namely fully visually simulated ships, aircraft, radars, missiles, weather, etc, etc, etc together with all the CMO tech.
I also note that like CMO, the developers are producing a MNW Professional edition ( just like CMO Professional edition )

Must admit that I'm excited by the announcement that MNWs Beta version will become available in the very near
future in the Matrix games channel video of the 8th October. ;)

I always thought MNW was much more a submarine game with some fairly abstracted surface capabilities. Very much like Cold Waters.

btw, I'm not holding my breathe on them hitting any commitments. They have been pretty slow in getting stuff done and communicating.

I think the one to look at as more CMO-like is Sea Power. Its discussed in another thread.

Yes it will be interesting to see what users reactions will be when the Beta version becomes available.
I did like Cold Waters but it suffered from being just a one sub centric game.
The developers are hoping to turn it into a multiplayer game as well as a single player game.

Modern Naval Warfare is years away.

Check out Seapower. It's due to be released within the year. Its not going to be near as sophisticated as CMO, won't have a fraction of the depth, or shear bulk of units. However, its probably a bit more game than simulation and has more traditional eye candy.

As thewood1 said, MNW and CMO are two completely different styles of games. MNW is a submarine/ship simulator (ex. Cold Waters).

Sea Power would be roughly equivalent to CMO, but not nearly the scale that CMO covers and micromanagement hell once you get above a handful of units. It's like a ship simulator that wants to be an operational level game. I have my doubts as to how successful it'll be.

From what I´ve seen and heard so far MNW compares best to Dangerous Waters.

I've been watching a lot of Sea Power videos on Youtube. Obviously, this is some kind of alpha/beta version of the game and it's still a bit buggy, but they're very open about that this, so I imagine most of the problems will be fixed by the time the game is actually released.

It looks like it will be a lot of fun. Lots of eye candy. I can't see the details about the various ships, etc. clearly enough on the video to have any idea how accurate or detailed their information is. Also, it sounds like you're limited to platforms from 1960 to 1990, more or less, and I have no idea if they have all the different versions of certain platforms or just one generic version. For example, I'm sure they have F-4 Phantoms in the game, but do they have all the different versions, with different sensors and weapons, the way Command does?

One little thing I noticed is that it looks like you can't turn off the data blocks for units you do not have selected. You always see all of the data blocks. As one might suspect, this leads to a messy and (a more important problem) confusing view of the battlefield. I could see a large scenario (e.g., carrier battle) rapidly becoming very difficult to manage. (Of course, that might be a matter of practice and/or I'm just not very good at doing this.)

Any other thoughts on Sea Power?

In Sea Power, a couple of the early release videos are actually specific that anything but smaller scale scenarios become difficult to manage. There is no same-side automation. The devs stated that they didn't plan on developing it in the near future. So it could very well end up a click-fest in larger scenarios. I'm not even sure there is any automatic pauses. I just haven't seen anyone use it yet.

btw, in the Sea Power Steam forums, you can already see people asking about missile dynamics, aircraft maneuvering, etc. The answers typically are that they will get to it.

Modern Naval Warfare is NOT like Cold Waters.

Cold Waters can be best compared gameplay-wise to the old Jane's Fleet Command, where the gameplay is centered around commanding one submarine on a large map while the management of the different stations (sonar, helm etc) is simplified or abstract. Fleet Command is very old but is worth looking at for old timers like me who don't mind chunky graphics. YT videos will show you what's what.

Sea Power shares some elements with Cold Waters as can be read in this thread answered by the devs:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SeaPower_NCMA/ ... _game_sea/

Sea Power's gameplay is like CMO but limited in scope regarding era and also only naval based, but with its own 3D engine and ship models.

Modern Naval Warfare is Sub Command or Hunter Killer 688i on steroids, Dangerous Waters also had helicopter, aircraft and surface ships to control. What I have seen on the videos is that it simulates operation of the different stations on the submarine, instead of having an abstract layer of sensor management like Cold Waters. A more simplified and older game that scratches the same itch is Fast Attack, available as abandonware.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVVk6F8ynAw

So basically: Fleet Command, Cold Waters, CMO and Sea Power are alike, and MNW, Sub Command, Dangerous Waters and Fast Attack are alike.

Didn't want to be anal, but in this case, crossing your T-s is essential.

"Command a nuclear submarine"

Right from the Cold Waters store page. It was originally built to be a sub simulator and thats what it was when I played it. That is not like Sea Power or Fleet Command. It is more comparable to Dangerous waters and MNW. Thats what they are too.

I only played it for a month. Maybe some mods came out to make it broader, but it was a sub sim at its core.

You are missing the point, although I have been elaborate. I'm talking about gameplay here, not playable units. Sea Power, Fleet Command and Cold waters all present you with a large map (that can be swapped with the 3D view of units), where you control a unit or multiple units, while the sensors control aboard your unit by yours truly is 'abstracted'. Yes, there is basic classification of contacts allowing you to shuffle through noise 'contacts' in Cold Waters, but it does not feature TMA, Waterfall, Broadband, Narrowband, and Helm stations like Dangerous Waters, Sub Command and the other two I listed.

You are commanding a unit as captain or commander of that unit. The operator-stations on your ship are abstracted, meaning : simplified gameplay interaction.

MNW, DW, SC, HK688 and Fast Attack, are on the same pitch here, they feature a number of stations like radar, EMS, passive and active sonar, demon, target motion analysis that immerse you into finding and classifying targets as an operator (you can make mistakes and classify a neutral or friendly as hostile), while you can ALSO play as the commander, leaving the AI to manage the stations, for a more 'strategic' feel.

A game I would put in between these two is 'Highfleet'. It has 'flying ships' and yes, it's a SF mix of RPG with ship building, stores management, radar operation, strategic decision making, and action.

Hope this makes sense.

There must have been changes after I played it. I only got to command a single sub. I know there were player mods that allowed a little broader control. But I never used them. I moved on pretty quickly.

And I do get the point that DW was way more detailed in its command interface. But FC was literally a fleet commander role. Whereas my memory of CP was a single vessel.

CP - single sub
DW - single sub
MNW - mostly a single sub as far as I can tell
FC - fleet commander
SP - task force commander
CMO - Fleet, theater, and task force commander

Granted, I could be mashing up my memory of CP and DW.

That is all fine and dandy, but whether the games feature single sub or not, or surface ships can hardly be used to qualify what games are alike, which is what is relevant when you want to purchase a new game that scratches the same itch. Otherwise, you can write a post that compares CMO to World Of Warships, which would make as much sense as comparing DCS to Ace Combat 7, just because you can fly the F-16 in both games.

For example DCS, Falcon BMS and IL2 great battles are similar games, although they feature different units or a different era.

MNW from the looks of it, will follow Dangerous Waters, and have all separate operator stations for you to play with on ONE submarine. Cold Waters allows you a choice of different submarines, and allows control of just THAT chosen submarine in the campaign, while NO operator stations are present for the player to control separately except for the fluffy implementation of contact classification by propeller noise.

That is also probably why it takes much more time to develop a game like MNW in comparison to CW. And I do like both games, they are simply different games offering a different scope.

I'm talking about scope and scale of decision-making. Thats my list. That puts MNW in the same category as CW. SP and FC are half way between those and Harpoon/CMO.

Modern Naval Warfare (MNW) as well! From the promotional videos, it looks like it combines the depth of CMO with enhanced visuals and modernized tech, offering more immersive simulations with fully visualized ships, aircraft, and other elements. The professional edition also piques my interest, especially with its expanded features. Looking forward to the beta launch! A classmate of mine struggled with managing deadlines for his assignments. I suggested this ukwritings.com/assignment-service service, and he was amazed by the professionalism and quality of their work. The assignment was insightful, well-researched, and error-free. He submitted it on time and even received great feedback from his professor. This platform truly supports students who face academic challenges.
