SGS combat

Just picked up Afrika Corps (which is great fun) and trying to figure out combat. How is the type of unit attacked factored in? It looks like a unit with light anti-tank guns (for example) has the same chance of damaging a formation with Italian L6/40s as one with Pz IVs (or Tigers or Grants or whatever)?
