File->Save Unit As... not working

Post by shortty »

When I try to save a unit it does not save the unit :-( The "Save Unit" dialog comes up, the file name is set to the unit's name .unt and the folder is where I loaded the last scenerio. Everything looks fine but when I click Save the windows closes with no error but no file is anywhere on my hard drive.

I built new virtual machines with fresh install of windows 10 and 11. I've tried fresh installations of TOAW IV 4.1.0.40. (4.1.0.20 has the same problem)

Anybody seen this before? Any fixes / workarounds? What am I doing wrong?

Previously, have you ever been able to save a unit file?
Try saving the file to Desktop, just to make sure it isn't a location problem.

My initial setup was a windows 11 virtual machine. I worked with that setup for a few days before I tried to save a .unt. Then the file would save but it would mess up the path. Where I picked C:\Games\TOAW-IV\MyScenerios for the location and MyPanzerDiv.unt for file name it actually saved C:\Games\TOAW-IV\MySceneriosMypanzerDiv.unt. Note that "MyScenerios" is part of the filename not the path!
I then setup windows 10 and 11 virtual machines and installed TOAW. In those setups I was not able to save any .unt files. Save Scenerio As... works fine. Save OOB As... saves nothing. Save Equipment(XML) As... works as expected.

And saving to Desktop did not change anything :-(

I tried installing TOAW on my windows 11 laptop. Still broken.
Re-downloaded both TheOperationalArtofWar4-SetupRelease-v4.1.0.20.zip and TheOperationalArtofWar4-UpdateComp-v4.1.0.40.zip from Matrix games website and reinstalled on the laptop. Still can not save .unt.

I assume other people are using "Save Unit As.." fairly regularly without problems.

It is probably saving it in the same place the scenario is located. For a scenario you are making it will likely be Documents/My Games/The Operational Art of War IV/Scenarios/<scenario name>.

It will put it there no matter where you want it. Never used to be that way but last time Ralph/Bob patched they messed stuff up and have never fixed it. You used to be able to say exactly where you wanted the new units to go but now it's a default place you have no control over.

Here's my thread on this:

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 4&t=344028

As shown in that thread, the sad fact is that it works for some but not all. Unfortunately, I'm one of the ones that it works for - making it very difficult for me to troubleshoot it.

OK, this is weird. The .unt files I am looking for are showing as "Recent files" in File Explore. There are shortcuts to my missing .unt files in AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items\. These short cuts point to the location where I was trying to save the .unt files but those files are missing.
That indicates to me that the files were actually written to the drive at least long enough for windows to put them as Recent.

If I have to make a lot of units of different types I use the version that allowed me to put them where I wanted such as this:

So, after much reading and testing, I have concluded that "Save Unit As.." does NOT work properly and hasn't since 4.0.0.11. Some combination of Opening / Playing / Saving scenarios sets the default unit save directory to something usable but I have not been able to find that combination yet. And 4.0.0.11 is no longer available but was a poor solution anyway so it doesn't matter. It sounds like this will never be fixed.
Am I wrong?

The attached zip contains a .unt file. On the outside chance that this might fix the path, see if you can load the unit into a test scenario. Then copy out a unit. Check the recycle bin/trash.

I cannot get that .unt to load!! It says OK then never loads the unit.

PS my recycle bin is full of the .unt files I've been trying to save in previous testing.

You’re about as far up the creek as one can go.
As a work around you can make single unit dummy formations (or formations of multiple dummy units) then use the Formation Copy/Cut/Paste functions. Insert where needed, delete out the ones you don’t want and adjust the formation name. The dummy units can be deployed in an unused area of the map or just deleted when you’re finished editing.

I assume you've pulled deleted unt files out of the bin and they give the same result.

Honestly, I'm giving up. Any game that works this poorly straight out of the box is not something I want to get involved with. I am a software engineer by day and have been playing TOAW since it came out (1980's? 90s?) so I feel that I am qualified to do this. I paid full price, it doesn't work and there is no support.
I am done wasting my time on this piece of shit!!!!

What?! Just wait, in only 5 and a half years there'll be a patch to make the fix.

@shortty - sorry you spent so much time trying to get that feature to work. Maybe you could find it workable to create unit templates within the scenario's OOB, as pictured below. With these type units, you can copy the unit, cut it and paste it elsewhere in the oob, and also copy/paste equipment between units created.
