[WAD] CMO Cluster ammunition in ASuW role

Post by Tcao »

First, I don't think this is a bug. I was a little surprise at the Cluster bomb's effect on naval vessel however, especially its ability to cause a serve flooding

a flight of 4 Marine A-7E attack a Minsk class CVGH and a Kanin DDG. They are coming in from stern, which is the deadzone of Kanin's SAM mount. Each soviet vessel gets 4 CBU-59/B APAM. A lot of sensors destroyed, weapon mounts no longer working, all 14 Yak-38 parked on Minsk flight deck are destroyed (the other 22 Yak in Hanger are intact) which is good. But I was surprised that the cluster bomb caused a serve flooding. Any explanation on that?
Also the Kanin's engine is destroyed

I don't see a problem here. Exposed radars and sensors would and should get torn to pieces by cluster munitions. I think the hull and system damage look as you would expect but flooding is probably higher then it should be.

Perhaps the clusters triggered some exposed ammunition on the flight deck, leading to further explosions that threatened the watertight integrity of the ship? Doesn't seem terribly out of the realm of possibility to me at all.

With that said, I usually don't see much flooding when I use cluster munitions on surface ships.

IIRC one of the few RL cases of cluster munitions against surface vessels that we have for reference is the employment of Mk20 Rockeyes by USN A-6s against Iranian missile boats during the Tanker Wars and Praying Mantis.

Reportedly they left them in abysmal shape, practically ready to sink - which would track with what you are observing.
