Question on SAM's Altitude

Post by DWReese »

I'm curious.

I'm playing a Community scenario called "Enough is Enough."

The target area is protected by SA-22 SAMs which, according to the database, has a weapon ceiling of 25000 feet.

My planes are no lower than 36000 feet.

The land elevation is less than 1000 feet.

The SA-22 still shot at, and hit, my planes.

In looking at the Weapon End Game report, it indicates that the agility was adjusted by 2.2 due to altitude.

What exactly is the 2.2? I assume that this represents a percentage which reduces the hit potential.

But, if the ceiling of the weapon was only 25000 feet, why was it permitted to shoot at my plane which was at 36000 feet. Even with the land elevation, the difference is still more than 10000 feet.

Is there something that now allows this? If so, does this mean that weapon ceilings aren't hard, and don't really exist, or are they now just sort of guidelines?

There are 4 SA-22 missiles in the DB, two of them with a ceiling of 25000 ft and the other two with a ceiling of 65617 ft.

Can you share a save of the scenario?

Quick confirmation. Are you reading the correct units? Feet vs meters?

I just played this for a bit, ran some planes over the Pantsir to the NE and they did not fire. I did not update the DB (it uses 508). I played in editor mode, but that *shoudn't* have an effect. Check your database and version (I just updated a few days ago to 1.07 1567.

I tried this using the db that it was created with, and the updated one (510), and it fired in both of them.

If you manually click on it it the unit ALWAYS says that it can't fire due to the altitude, but it does anyway.

In the save you can see one missile heading toward one of the units, and if you look at the log, you can see that others have already been fired. More will also be fired as well, if the planes aren't shot down by the CAP.

I am using 1567. I used the 508 db, and the 510 db. The MIDDLE SA-22 is the one that is firing at the planes.

Here is a full version.

Sunliner #9 is killed at 13:15.49 by a SA-22 while at 41000 feet.

Two other SA-22s were fired at enemy planes at 36000 feet or more, but they failed to hit.

Yeah, I played your version and it shoots at the F15's at 36,000', maybe it's a 510 database issue as I tested it at 508 only (the one it came with). Seems we both have the updated version of the game itself, so it must be. If I get a chance I'll test it after a DB update. How did you update the scenario? What options did you check (.ini ... etc)?

I didn't check anything other than clicking on "I understand--Rebuild Scenario now."

I had it do it on 508, and that's why I tried it on the current (510) to see if there was any difference. In both of the dbs it fired at the F-15J at 36k feet and above. One was fired on a 44k feet.

What can point it to a db issue vs game issue try another low-level SAM.

I see on your file they attack the F15J but no the F-2A. Seems their radars are not seeing well either. Plus, WRA is different for the south 2 Pantsir, the north one is basically no fire. Still don't know why they fire on a target at 36k+. I tried mine and they don't fire, but on yours they do. No idea.
