You can indicate whether or not a platform uses a weapon in self-defense and at what range.

For example, you can indicate a flight of F-15Es on a strike mission and self-escorting may only use AMRAAMs in self defense at a maximum on 20nm to basically ignore threats at greater range and press on to the target.

This also allows a unit to fire on a target close to it and therefore to defend, even if this target is already engaged by another unit and a missile salvo has already been allocated to it.

https://command.matrixgames.com/?p=3598 - scroll down to "Self Defence".

Basically once the target gets within the self-defence threshold, all the rules and niceties about firing discipline, conserving ammo, shoot-look-shoot-dance-shoot doctrines etc. go out the window and you start throwing the kitchen sink at them.
