Overrun question

Korsun Pocket is a the second game using the award winning SSG Decisive Battles game engine. Korsun Pocket recreates the desperate German attempt to escape encirclement on the Russian Front early in 1944. The battle is a tense and exciting struggle, with neither side having a decisive advantage, as the Russians struggle to form the pocket, then try to resist successive German rescue efforts and last ditch attempts at breakout.

Overrun question

Post by Pawlock »

Can someone confirm or deny my understanding of this rule;

ie in order to avoid overruns, you must have BOTH these criteria, 3 steps and entrenched?

So in essence even a 2 step unit that is entrenched can be ovverrun? and 3 step units and highter not entrenched can be overrrun too?

That is what it says in section 3.13.4 of the manual.

I posted some info in relation to avoiding overruns in another thread.. I think it was the Defensive Tips/strategies etc.. one..

In a nutshell... yes you need to have 3 combat steps and an entrenched unit to avoid an overrun. The 3 steps can be made from 2 units in a stack etc.. it doesnt matter.. but it must be 3 steps in total.

There are some other rules re entrenched though.. when a unit entrenches it gives off an entrench bonus for the rest of the units in the stack.. that bonus is directly proportional to this own strength.. I *think* 1 step units that entrench do NOT give off an entrench bonus.. To avoid an overrun, the entrenched unit must be giving off an entrenched bonus to the rest of the stack.. so a 1 step unit entrenched will not assist in avoiding an overrun..

Thats my understanding..
Isn't that bizarre?

The manual is a little confusing here. All units in a hex must be attacked together. If there are 3 steps in a hex, and at least one of them is entrenched, then the hex cannot be overrun.

Separate to this, any hex with an entrenched unit gets an additional 1 defensive shift when attacked.

You have to be careful with this, though. A conventional attack on a 3 step hex might easily cause a step loss. The remaining 2 steps are now a legitimate target for an overrun (the computer has done this to me a number of times).
