Polar Ice Cap Question

Is there somewhere an indication showing that a sub is operating below ice cap? I remember from a tutorial that firing a missile below ice can cause damage to the submarine, but how does one know if this is the case (or not)?

The only one I know is the border in the map (borders and coastline enabled).
