Blown away by witp - A Masterpiece of Strategy Gaming
I've been playing strategy wargames since the 1990s, and this game is hands down the best I've encountered! It’s incredibly deep in detail, yet strikes the right balance with its level of abstraction. Strategic and tactical decisions make you truly feel their impact as the campaign unfolds.
Although my preferred theater has always been the Western Front and I had little prior experience with the Pacific War, this game completely swept me off my feet!
I actually consider War in the Pacific superior to War in the West, which I played extensively. Compared to post-cold war era games I'd place it alongside Command Modern Operations.
Huge congratulations to the dev team and the amazing community that has supported and enriched this masterpiece.

Yes, it is the best WW2 strategy game and possibly the best game ever combining strategic, operational and tactical levels.konstpan wrote: Tue Aug 05, 2025 11:52 am I've been playing strategy wargames since the 1990s, and this game is hands down the best I've encountered! Command Modern Operations is a good simulator but its fun factor is almost zero and scare factor is much higher even though the events that this game depicts involved more horror than any of the scenarios that CMO has.
Re: Blown away by witp - A Masterpiece of Strategy Gaming
Even though the game has aged over 15 years and is based on even older games, solid modeling of the major factors on the strategic level and lots of randomness in plan execution keeps it fascinating. Good to hear of newer players recognizing what a gem it is!
That said, it must be said that only players who can tolerate unending detail and enjoy little victories (like getting a shipload of supply to an isolated island) will stick with the game. Brilliant major battles are far between - but all the more enjoyable for the months of build-up you have to set them up. That investment of time makes it exciting.

I really like how WITP:AE mixes land, air and naval aspects in a good measure. Land is more abstract, while air and naval, with their individual pilots and ships, have a more RPG and boardgame feel.

I do feel the same way about LCUs and their commanders, and that boardgame feel is strong I agree.Yaab wrote: Tue Aug 05, 2025 3:10 pm I really like how WITP:AE mixes land, air and naval aspects in a good measure. The land war can be abstracted to this level when your operational level movement is in most theaters confined by geography and logistics, it becomes more like strategic level positional warfare.

Welcome to our world! There is no other game like it ever made and probably never will be again since there will be no WITP2 sadly...konstpan wrote: Tue Aug 05, 2025 11:52 am I've been playing strategy wargames since the 1990s, and this game is hands down the best I've encountered! This is why we still hang on to this game and the game still lives on today with an ongoing last beta patch still in the works...

Welcome to the WiTP:AE community! You may be 15 years late, but you are welcome. There hasn't been a day or two that's gone by in the last 25 years without me thinking of the Uncommon Valor, WiTP and WiTP:AE franchise. I am still involved in an excellent PBEM WiTP:AE campaign, which is in September 1943. This, some 15 years (!) or more after WiTP:AE was released?konstpan wrote: Tue Aug 05, 2025 11:52 am I've been playing strategy wargames since the 1990s, and this game is hands down the best I've encountered! What a great take, Yaab. I think you're right and the transition between tactical-operational-strategic is seamless, making it one of the most appreciable aspects of game control and input.Yaab wrote: Tue Aug 05, 2025 3:10 pm I really like how WITP:AE mixes land, air and naval aspects in a good measure. Probably best value per hour spent playing.

it's pretty good
. just wish the AI was more competent so i dont have to rely on playing with actual humans to have fun

Re: Blown away by witp - A Masterpiece of Strategy Gaming
Soon we will have AI winning most of the games, I will take a human any day to share the experience with.Nazcatraz wrote: Thu Aug 07, 2025 1:57 pm it's pretty good. just wish the AI was more competent so i dont have to rely on playing with actual humans to have fun

It's excellent. You have to remember that you are playing against scripts and not the AI so much. Try a nasty scenarioNazcatraz wrote: Thu Aug 07, 2025 1:57 pm it's pretty good. just wish the AI was more competent so i dont have to rely on playing with actual humans to have fun
