Minesweeping

Post by panzer51 »

Ok, so the manual says Minesweeping TF will sweep the hex it is in plus 6 hexes around it. So I parked my MSWP TF one hex out and.... nada. So is the manual wrong?

Are your sweepers coastal? They only sweep the hex there in........

The To'su class vessels can become a AMc type and they are useful little vessels. But check your OPs reports as well as your threat setting for your TF.

Did you set a destination or set the hex as a patrol? They might only sweep when set to patrol a hex.

I was under the impression that they sweep in both patrol mode or destination, as long as at destination they don't dock, retreat, resupply or refuel...

Patrol mode is probably needed, just being in a TF either is not enough.

The target is Bataan, my TF sits in the hex next to it. It should at least attempt to minesweep. Does it have to be patrol? Manual makes it sound like it should only have a destination.

This is not a big deal, Bataan is still in US hands, I was just curious to see if it would work, apparently the manual is wrong.

Please understand that "the manual" is a snap shot in time over a game that spans decades. Before you allude to it being "wrong" what version of the game are you playing and what rewrite of the manual are you using?? I've experienced sweeping from minesweeping TFs when directed to a hex and ordered to stay (no retirement allowed), and when ordered to "patrol" a hex with or without a # of days set. I'm playing scen 28 with extended maps and limited cargo. My manual is the original hard copy release.

A patrol sweeps the route you set as it passes through the hex, it will not clear the hex entirely as it passes through, just a path on each pass. If you set a single hex patrol zone it will clear that hex but patrols are not needed.

A destination concentrates on that target until it is clear as does setting no target, but the latter is it's own hex.

If a full sea going minewseeper (AM or DMS) is used it will also sweep the surrounding hex of a target but concentrates on the target first. Aux minesweeper (AMc) only sweep the target.

I set it up as patrol and it does clear Bataan hex but not in the way I expected. Essentially the TF enters the hex where it's promptly sunk by CD guns. I guess setting the hex simply to destination doesn't work, you need to set it up as patrol.

If you are Japanese and Bataan is still under US control, just set your minesweepers to patrol Bataan. They might even clear some mines before they are sunk by the coastal defense artillery.
