Manual very vague. Some questions

I know the game is old, and this might never be answered, but here goes nothing; need some help with these:

1. Uboats. How are they efficiently used? Whenever I attempt to send them to the Atlantic box, the only viable path is through the Channel, and they always get found (evade and passive posture/retreat from battle set on "on"), and obliterated. Tried to go the long way, from the north, out to the Atlantic subregion, and back to the Atlantic box, but this is not feasable (region north of North sea is not accessible by Germans)

2. Depots. Manual says build them every 3-5 regions, on areas with towns of level 3 and below, but in the game, it seems arbitrary were it is allowed and where is prohibited to build them. Do I gain anything by building a depot in a city? (ie: Brussels).

3. Replacements: I keep some battered units from moving for turn after turn, but no hits are replenished. What can I do?

You have to zip it first.
