Multiple strikes?

Post by CaesarAug »

For some time I have been thinking about the possibility of leaving the unit combat parameters permanently at a some sort of game-start values, and have manual research only increase the number of strikes and automatic research increase damage evasion parameters.

It would certainly alter the game’s default flow of battles.

So manual research upgrades would only increase the number of strikes (but not increase combat values), to be applied to individual units, whereas automatic research upgrades would increase evasion percentage, applied to a given unit type.

Curious if anyone has ever modded something like this? Would it overly change the entire battle dynamic of the game, for better or worse? Any thoughts?

It would depend a lot on how many and what types of units you wanted to apply this to. Corps and armies would make a major change, for example. I have done this sort of thing in Orb & Crown, and can say that it makes a huge difference. So much so, that I have hauled back on it so that only the best units get multiple attacks. Generally, each strike applies a de-moralization effect as well as damage, and often a de-entrenchment, too. As an example, 3 units with two attacks each could destroy an 6 entrenched unit very easily in a single turn, whereas it might take a few turns for them to do it normally. Also, there could be only one level of 'extra strike', unless you want units to attack more than twice in a turn, and so it should be pretty expensive to compensate for its effects.
