I cannot understand whats happening when I attack

So, i am brand new to the game. When I plan an attack with, say, 7 stacks, and execute that attack, I hear lot's of attack sounds but nothing shows on my screen.

The only thing moving is at the bottom, the different unit names are coming and going (like it's scrolling through a list).

My question is, is there a way to know who is attacking in real time? (The only other war game I have played is WDS campaigns so that is my only point of reference...)
