Transport Ship

Post by William the Silent »

I tried to create a transport ship for troops.
I have the anchor place, I have a ship, but troops will not board.
What am I doing wrong?
How do I create a Transport Ship?

There is no such thing as a transport ship unit in TOAW. We don't have that here :D

Instead sea transport is regulated through the Sea Transport Capacity (see 11.4 in the manual) that a designer can set in the scenario editor.

I read 11.4, but it doesn't help me.
I created a ship.
I moved a unit on the harbor with the ship.
But no Embark option in the menu.

You have to create Sea Transport Capacity with an event in the editor. Then you will have a sea transport capacity in the game. That can lift units in an anchorage that weigh no more than that amount.

Thanks that really helped.
I even do not have to create a fleet for transport.
Often hard to find answers in the manual.

Thanks for pointing this out. Probably the blue part is a poor choice of wording that is misleading.

11.4. Seaborne Movement
This is the movement of Land units through Deep Water or Anchorage locations. In most cases, Land units must be Embarked on Ships to move by sea. In order to use Seaborne Movement, your unit must begin its Turn in an Anchorage location and you must have enough Sealift Capacity to lift the unit. A Ship icon in the Unit Panel shows eligibility for Seaborne Movement. Click on the icon to bring up the Unit Report and load the unit on Ships. In some Scenarios, some units may have an independent Amphibious Capability via the Amphibious Icon and can always move using Seaborne Movement.
Units conducting seaborne movement are subject to interdiction attacks by in-range air units set to Sea Interdiction missions and by naval/coastal gun units within gunnery range of the movement.

In an effort to make it clearer, perhaps the following addition:

Land units must be Embarked on Ships [represented by Sea Transport Capacity] to move by sea.

Or does anyone have a different suggestion?

The term Sealift Capacity could also use some change or clarification. As Bob points out above, it is listed as Sea Transport Capacity in the Theater section of the Situation briefing. The term 'Sealift Capacity' is nowhere else in the manual, and the Editor Manual gives us this gem:

17.9.4. Event Effects
Force 1 or 2 Sealift Capacity: ... is set to a certain Level.

Lol. In the Editor it is called Sea Transport [1 or 2].

So for clarity, perhaps this change to the Editor Manual:
17.9.4. Event Effects
Force 1 or 2 Sea Transport: ... is set to a certain Level. Sea Transport is the capacity of unit weight that can be transported by sea each turn.

Suggest you consider the following:
Force 1 and 2 Sea Transport: ... is set by the scenario designer as an event. During the scenario it can be changed (up or down) by additional events. Sea Transport capacity is the sum total of unit weight that can be embarked at any one time.

Also, what is the latest version of the Civilian Manual? Last version I saw was a MS Word document version 1.02.

Because 17.9.4 is describing Event Effects, so it's not necessary to add extra verbiage indicating that. But we could indicate the action of the event, such as 'The event can change the value, not add to or subtract from it'.

I don't think I have version #'s. I'll upload the latest here:
