Mine Detection Question

Post by Knightpawn »

Q: Can active sonars on submarines detect mines? If yes does the sub need to be periscope depth (close to surface), or it does not make too much of a difference?

If the sonar has mine-detection capability, then relative depth shouldn't matter.

But pay attention to slant ranges. Mine-detection sonars tend to have small range, so (like with MADs) every difference in altitude can bite you badly for horizontal range.
