I would file this under, possible but not likely in the near future. Given how long it has taken to get the latest patch out based on traditional development methods, and the limited potential revenue stream, I cannot see this being a priority for the developers.

If you had buckets of money to throw at the problem it should be possible to develop a real AI that is better than the existing script method. While WITPAE is a far more complex game than War in Spain, it is not as nearly as complex as protein folding predictors like with AlphaFold which has revolutionized biochemical research.

All that said, I am curious to play War in Spain to test drive the AI capability - so good on Matrix for that!

All I want is a good AI that could react to my move so that I won't have to rely on PBEM to play the game prorperly :? No waiting for turns, no commitment pressure, playing the game on my own terms

I imagine the War in Spain engine will at some point be used to create something for the Pacific Theatre, and other areas.

I think it will be used to create War in the Med and then maybe one day WITP2...

I just got War in Spain and am still reading the manual and going through the editor to try to build an OOB (I know next to nothing about the Spanish Civil War so this will let me understand the troop organization).

My first impressions so far is that it's outstanding. I especially like the way they are handling the land unit organization (among other things) - no unit breakdowns like WITP:AE and actual divisional, brigade and regimental HQ units.

If they redid WITP:AE using this new engine I'd gladly pay hundreds of dollars for the game knowing as much time I'd spend on it.

Same it would be a dream! And a real AI no scripts!

I'd settle with AI that could switch between multiple subscripts during game. That would give it some sort of ability to react player moves.

This would be acceptable. But do we really want something that can beat us or at the very least punish us for our stupid mistakes ;) ?

I am not going to say never but the Spainish civil war is not a subject I have any interest in and hence unlikely to purchase no matter how good the engine is reported to be.

OT: I've WitW but have rarely played it despite my huge interested in the WW2 in Europe. I can't get past the air war part.

Even Mediterranean area is very limited interest, there were very few (though significant) naval engagements in WW II.

And Atlantic is not very suitable for WitP-style, since most action was sub vs. convoy with few heavy ship engagements.

That might be too punishing for players, considering game already have learning cliff instead of learning curve. 8-)

I have played WitP-AE (and predecessor) since published and still find new things now and then.

What would be truly impressive if every land battle would open new window where battles would be solved in War in Spain-style...

But that might be bit like trying to play War in Europe board game in house with cats...3600 counters...

Same here. I got War in the Spain just to check out the engine but it's hard to understand with all the unit names being in Spanish. They do have text files where you can Anglicize (or whatever language you want) the terms so you can see what is infantry or cavalry easily. Also for those not up on Spanish geography it can be hard trying to find the location of a certain unit. there's no 'H' hotkey like in WITW or WITE2 that will take you to a unit or location - much like with WITP I guess.

My two main games have always been WITP or WITW. I've tried to play WITE2 but I just can't seem to get into it as well as I can the other two.

Started playing the 90s version of Grigsby's Pacific War and when I was looking for an update to it stumbled across the first WITP which I got. Always been one of my favorites.

They seem to resolve turns basically they same way as in WITP with the only big difference being the hex scale which is only 5nm.

When you have units coming in, you can click on the line in the Operations Report and most of the time it will take you to that location. When units are leaving, you can click on the location and you will go to that location.

Good to know but what about units that are already "in game" or for subsequent turns after they arrive?

I'm sure this is just a beginners complaint and once I get accustomed to the geography it won't be a problem but right now, for me at least, it's a small stumbling block that's bothersome but won't make me dump the game.

Click on the name in the unit list, then click the "Home" button which takes you to that location.
