Where The Queen Wants Them

Post by StuccoFresco »

Fictional scenario, I have to conquer a railway junction. Small map, fairly straightforward mission with a narrow path to victory. My units are split up and spread across the map in depth, so I immediately start with concentrating them along 4 vectors.

The first objective will be the encirclement of the German fortifications in the middle of the map, near Obraztsoskaya: the 99° Tank Brigade will lead the northern pincer and the 6° and 189° the southern one. The 9° Motorized Brigade will support the southern pincer, while the 197th Rifle Division will protect the penetration until I (hopefully) close the encirclement. Artillery from the 2nd Artillery Group of the 57th Army will support the whole operation. A single split up Regiment of the 203rd Rifle guards the southernmost edge of the map, right in front of other German strongholds and my own victory hexes. I hope the Germans don’t counterattack there…

In the north we have a bridgehead over the river and several bridging engineers that will create new ones. The 15th Guards will take the lead, and I’ll again try to encircle the German stronghold in front of the crossings instead of assaulting it. There’s an objective on the northern edge of the map: if I manage to complete the encirclement and achieve a breakthrough I’ll try swinging north to cut off the German forces there as well. Artillery from the 1st Artillery Group of the 57th Army will support the whole operation. Two Regiments of the 203rd Rifle will protect the flanks and the penetrations.

My plan is very offensive-minded and I don’t have a Plan B.

TURN 1
Fairly straightforward: I attack along the predetermined vectors and hope for the best. Up north I have to break through the German lines and I decide to expend ALL my command orders to have an early breakout instead of using them piecemeal and risk failure after failure. I manage to rack up 9,7 and 6,2 odds. All my air force is on Counter Air duty.

Image

TURN 2
All attacks in the north went quite well: I carved a path through the German 371st Infanterie Division and my engineers put the bridges where I wanted. I push my armored units through the gap in the German lines and the Guards follow closely. The new bridges south of the German fortifications will be exploited by part of the 56° Tank Brigade to try an immediate link-up with the rest of the Brigade pushing from the northern pincer. It’s a risky move but could lead to an immediate encirclement.

In the south, the main armored thrust pushed aside a German unit south of their minefields but there was no movement left to exploit the gap. The 9° Motorized Brigade will try to secure the penetration. The northern pincer, however, has slammed on the German infantry and will have to push through. I will try to swing the southern pincer north.

Enemy bombardments tried to hit my concentration of forces but did little damage.

In the deep south I managed to occupy the urban centres on both flanks of Nizhne-Lipowsky so a German offensive will have to push them out first. I hope they won’t try: I have zero reserves.

Image

TURN 3
Not very good: I manage to push forward the southern pincer south of Obraztsoskaya but the northern one is still stuck on the starting positions.

Up north I put more units over the river and in good positions for the next encirclement, but I could have pushed further. I renew the offensive: I must encircle the enemy fortifications or no real progress can be done. I also order the 610th Regiment of the 203rd Rifle Division that was defending Dudachensky to advance along the edge of the map to contest the enemy troops defending the northernmost VP so they don’t interfere with my main thrust.

In the south I double my efforts to put more German units out of supplies and into operational encirclement.

TURN 4
German aviation frustrates my offensives, stopping the northern thrust and allowing their defenses to hold and costing me 720 infantry losses. I still manage to encircle the German fortifications, but there is still no way to fully encircle the northern flank of the enemy front.

In the southern flank I expanded the breakthrough and put two enemy Regiments under operational encirclement. A German attack trying to hit the base of my penetration is repulsed.

In the north I try to slip past the German lines and extend my zones of control behind their defensive lines, also putting my hands on their artillery. It’s an ambitious move but the payoff may be the operational encirclement of an entire flank so it’s worth it.

In the south I try to swing north my entire breakthrough forces hitting hard at the German units already cut off from supplies and start to threaten their towns. I push the Motorized Brigade west to threaten their artillery as well.

TURN 5
Not a bad turn: in the north my advancing tanks put three more German units out of supplies, opening the possibility of their defeat by infantry assaults and potentially rolling their entire northern flank since those three units are holding off their entire line. Problem: my units are now overextended and the enemy has already tried cutting off the base of the penetration. Some of my tanks have assaulted one of the enemy’s heavy artillery units, with limited success but no losses on my part.

I’ll try to use the Guards’ recon unit to completely cut off the German northern flank, the main infantry body to crush the encircled troops, and I want to assault those damned German guns. The northern front must be decided THIS turn, even if it’s night. Night means no Luftwaffe and I can stomach the increased Intensity.

In the south the Germans expend a lot of command orders and air assets to try and hold their ground southeast of Perilovka to avoid my breakthrough to swing north. Since their infantry is ordered to hold at all cost, I fail to move them, but they suffer heavy losses. My motorized infantry advanced, so now I can attack their artillery park.

Since my vanguards spotted no units in Perfilovka, I’ll try to push the 189° Tank Brigade over the river there. It could be a decisive move. I’ll also try to crush the German unit that tried to stop me last turn. All available units will then expand the breakthrough to put a lot of mass over the German defensive line.

Image

TURN 6
The night gamble paid off: the attack in the north went off and decimated the three German units, although it failed to push them off that hex. The Germans lost 389 soldiers and 6 guns at the cost of just 94 soldiers on my part. In the south I overran the already decimated German infantry battalion, my units invaded the German rear and crossed the river at Perilovka.

In the north I start the complete encirclement of the remnants of the 371st Infanterie Division against the river and I’ll try to crush its already weakened units with infantry assaults. I also position the 56th Tank Brigade around the enemy artillery, ready to support an assault together with a Regiment of the 15th Guards. I think it’s also time to push the 1st Artillery Group over the river to support the next phase of the assault, together with the 71° Guards Mortar Regiment (Katyushas).

Down south I push more units beyond the river at Perilovka, with the intent of moving beyond Manskiy for a future assault on the town. Meanwhile I concentrate my 197th Rifle Division around the encircled German strongpoint south of the town, and push more units against the German artillery southwest preparing for a decisive assault next turn.

I have partisans available, and I order them to harass enemy airfields to disrupt the Luftwaffe activities. I also order a recon flight over the main objectives in the west.

Image

TURN 7
The northern flank starts collapsing, with several units of the beleaguered 371st Infanterie Division surrendering or outright eliminated. A preliminary attack on the enemy artillery has been more successful than anticipated.

In the south enemy bombardments hit hard against my Motorized Brigade, but my units are moving freely beyond the former German defensive line.

The recon flight reported 6 unidentified units near the main objective area.

Up north I close the ring around the remaining units of the 371st Infanterie Division, while I renew the armored assaults against the enemy artillery, with the support of the Guards’ infantry. More artillery and several HQs advance beyond the river.

In the south I want to prepare the assault on the German fortifications and artillery. It won’t be easy but must be done. I also try enacting immediately the encirclement of Manskiy; a risky move but it can expedite its fall considerably.

Image

TURN 8
Terrible news: enemy units are passing through Perilovka and presumably just put the 99° and 198° Tank Brigades out of supplies, along with a Regiment of the 197th Rifle Division and other small units. I have to restore a semblance of perimeter and scale back my ambitions in the south, especially since my big attack on the enemy artillery just pushed back one of their units at the cost of 198 soldiers.

In the north things are going smoothly: I eliminated what was left of an artillery regiment and my encirclement of three more Infantry Battalions was completed. I have to start eliminating the northern pocket to free up more units, and keep eliminating the German artillery.

Image

TURN 9
Not bad at all: one of my attacks up north straight up eliminated one of the enemy Battalions, and one against the encircled garrison of a German stronghold killed 327 enemy soldiers at the cost of just 22 of my own. Enemy artillery still holds up well against my combined arms assaults, though: 1 tank and 24 soldiers lost against two enemy guns silenced.

The worst development is further south: enemy units converging from southwest toward the area of my breakthrough. I maneuver my southern flank trying to form a defensive perimeter against this unknown threat, but I also start linking up with the northern flank to encircle Manskiy: the town gives the Axis a lot of points.

Up north I’ll try to speed up the elimination of the remaining pockets. I order some bombardment all over the front to soften up enemy formations.

TURN 10
The bombardments had almost no effect. This game definitely doesn’t reward artillery fire unless it supports an ongoing combat. One German unit was eliminated in the north, and another one is going to follow closely, even though it sits on a fortified hex and costed me just as many losses as I inflicted to it.

In the south I finally eliminated the isolated German garrison, and so far the unknown southern threat hasn’t advanced further. I identify the enemy units in Perfilovka and near it as the 670th Panzerjaeger Battalion and the 177th StuG Battalion; powerful units especially entrenched.

Northern front: it’s time to eliminate the last encircled unit up north and start to crush the newly encircled one Dobrinko. With the flank basically wrapped up I start shifting my units southwest toward Manskiy, with the 15th Guards Division getting a Move+ order.

Image

TURN 11
This will be a decisive turn: I will launch determined and well-supported attacks on Manskiy, Perfilovka, southwest of Dobrinko and on the northern bridges; their conquest would free up a lot of my own units for the latter part of this battle. I concentrated armor, artillery and infantry for a combined arms perfect storm. Wish me luck.

Image

TURN 12
Perfilovka and Manskiy’s defenders are wiped out by the massed assaults and the few survivors surrender! It’s a massive success! The other two assaults were successful but the enemy either refused to surrender or retreated avoiding complete annihilation.

I won’t be able to conquer the main objective area, so I’ll try to rack up more points for eliminating German units. I maneuver so I can assault the remains of the German center with as many units as possible from every direction, and I order a renewed (hopefully decisive) assault on the northern bridges.

I’ll also try to encircle and destroy the 177th StuG Battalion at Amelin.

Image

TURN 13
The 203rd Rifle Division finally conquers the northern bridges.

There’s not much to do but to launch some other assault on encircled units, and push forward the encirclement of Amelin, since I didn’t complete it last turn.

Image

TURN 14
The Luftwaffe came up in force and blunted my assaults, ensuring the survival of the encircled German troops. However I have time for a final assault, against Amelin as well now that I have completely surrounded it.

Image

END
Amelin falls into my hands and the German stronghold southeast of Manskiy surrenders. The other assault had some success but the Germans survived another day.

The battle is over: 64-45 for a solid victory. Losses-wise it has been catastrophic for Germany: 5566 soldiers lost, 18 tanks destroyed, 19 guns captured, 16 planes downed. The Soviets lost 2773 soldiers, 14 tanks and 3 guns overall.

CONCLUSIONS
Again, the AI showed zero ability or will to maneuver, letting me encircle unit after unit without ever trying to withdraw in time or truly contest my pincers. The German 94th Infanterie Division in the south did nothing with half of its units, just staying in place and watching the other half getting crushed in the middle of the map without ever trying to help. The 371st Infanterie Division didn’t move a single unit during the entire battle: all its units were encircled and destroyed in the same position they started the battle at.

A couple Mechanized units (which it seems were the entirety of the German reserves) were brought forward at a good time, taking Amelin and Perfilovka, but then did nothing else. They just watched my units slowly encircle them and ultimately crush them without EVER attempting to stop me.

During the entire battle I have seen the AI launch maybe a couple counterattacks.

At this point I have completed three different scenarios and I have to conclude that those scenario’s AIs have been shoddily programmed so the “baseline tactical AI” can’t act because it’s overridden by inflexible programmed orders. Upon further inspection, I see nothing besides simple "unit X go to hex Y". Once reached the target hex, the tactical AI is utterly incapable of reacting to anything at all. It simply does nothing as you slowly encircle unit after unit, and thus doesn't really exist as far as I'm concerned.
