War in Spain 1936-39 is the first in a new wargame series, using a new Land-Sea-Air engine inspired by War in the Pacific - Admiral’s Edition. Gameplay and realism are improved by TRUE AI and a detailed Logistics systems. A hyper detailed OOB reaches down to battalion and company level. Initial Naval Dispositions

Post by Q-Ball »

Having fun so far, really liking the game! Had some questions on the initial Naval dispositions; not sure it matters a ton in terms of gameplay, but I noticed some choices were made in terms of where Republican ships are on July 17.

It is a bit difficult, because several ships had mutinies after July 17 (Libertad on July 19, Jaime I same day), where the crew took over the ships from Nationalist Officers.

I noticed a few things:

1. At start, Libertad is off Ferrol, and Jaime I/Cervantes are Day 2 reinforcements at Cartagena. My understanding is that all 3 units were at Ferrol on the 17th, put to sea, and then were ordered to Cadiz/the Straight, where they arrived around the 19th (and on a couple ships, the crews arrested the officers)

2. Mendez Nunez is a Day 2 reinforcement, but in reality, this ship didn't make it to the map until September; she was in Spanish Guinea at-start, and was ordered around a bit before coming back home. Curious why she is avaialble right away to the Republic?

Probably doesn't matter a ton; the Republic will have Naval Superiority until German/Italian intervention regardless of how many of these ships are available, but curious on the decisions

Not to take anything away from the game!

You've found a error that's ready to be fixed in the first patch: Actually, the Jaime I was in Santander on July 17th, the Miguel de Cervantes in Ferrol and Mendez Nuñez will appear in Cartagena on September 23rd.

But the Libertad is outside the Ferrol estuary to facilitate gameplay. The ship departed on the early hours of July 18th and the coastal batteries didn´t fire on him because everything was ambiguous in those early days. But in the game, if the Libertad is republican, on the 17th it'll be crushed by the coastal defenses (the AI isn´t ambiguous). So we put him outside the estuary, and it has two days to get away (the coastal defenses are at a minimum during those days).
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
