Units without "attached to (HQ)" button.

Post by melvi »

Hello,
This one is prolly for Piteas. It is turn 9 (25-07-36) in my main campaign 1936-1939 scenario. As republican I have received lately couple HQs ( Sur and Levante) and I have been trying to “attach” units to them to gain the benefits they give. While doing so I have fount quite a bit number of units that don’t have the button to “attach” them to HQ.

They are the following (referred them ever as LCU editor slot):
-Garrison Militia units in Asturias area:
11246, 11249,11250 to 11256, 11258 to 11264.
-Garrison Militia units in Vasque area.
11527 to 11532, 11535 to 11537, 11539 and 11540.
- Other units in northern zone, I think mostly fixed units that are there since the turn 1.
6997, 6998, 7032 to 7034.

In the other republican area:
-Garrison Militias all around da place.
12280 to 12288 and 12294.
- Then other bunch of units all around the map that I think are mostly fixed units that are there since turn 1.
6049, 6919 to 6925, 6927, 6945 to 6954, 6959 to 6961, 6963 to 6965, 6970 to 6973, 6979 to 6981, 7006, 7009 to 7011, 7013, 7023, 7024, 7029 to 7031, 7036, 7042, 7044 and 7045.
I have sure missed some of the units that have been disbanded already.
Not very important since I have still no HQ to attach units in the northern area and in the other area are mostly units that are going to be disbanded without been in combat. Only issue is some garrison militias that in fact are in combat and without the possibility to attach them to any HQ.
I hope this helps. Regards:

Those garrison militias are static, they have no higher command to attach to in the game, if you did attach one to a higher level unit then attached them together, you have the entire bunch of units static.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

The issue is that you have some static garrison militias you can attach (to the Ejercito Español HQ unit for instance) and some others that you can’t cause they lack the button to open the screen to select the HQ. It happens the same with the other fixed units (the ones that will be disbanded in first days of campaign), some you can attach to an HQ and some others you can’t cause they lack the button to open the screen to select the HQ. That’s the issue I am trying to point out.

And in fact, i am trying to attach them to "their geographical” HQ, Ejercito Español HQ for center, Sur HQ for the ones in Andalucia-Extremadura ( the south), Levante HQ for the ones in Murcia-Valencia and easter ones in Castilla-La Mancha ( the east), and Aragon HQ for the ones in Aragon and Cataluña ( the north-east). I have been able to do so once those HQs have appeared, the first days of the war i had the garrisons , the ones that i could attach, in Andalucia attached the the Ejercito Español HQ. (Otherwise there is not many options to select one HQ or another for the republicans the first days of the scenario, in the northern part there is none so far).

Ejercito Español HQ was actually the entire Spanish Army headquarters.

The problem that you will have if you attach these garrisons to the higher HQs is there is a limit to the HQ ability to command units effectively. If you give them more of a burden, then they just might have some difficulties and your troops in the field actually fighting may suffer for that.

I do know about Ejercito Español HQ been the entire Spanish Army HQ. The problem is that it is the only HQ i can attach units to to have HQ benefits the first days of the scenario.

Again, i know about that, in fact i have suffered from that. Thats why i have been distributing the garrison militias, the ones with the "attached to" button active, among the different HQs that start appearing, same that with the other combat units been distributed too when the HQs are avaliable. And i want to attach those militias to HQs when they are going to participate in combat.

Besides that what i was trying to point out is the lack of "attached to ( HQ)" button in "some" units, while others of same category have it avaliable. If later i want or dont want or can or cant not use it ( cause there is no HQ avaliable or overburden, for instance if i could attach some northern militias to an HQ there is none avaliable first days of the war) thats a decision I have to take after been able to. And when I do, ill have all troubles you mentioned. At the moment there are units i cant attach physically to any HQ because they lack the button to do so, if doesnt matter if there is HQ or not or if an HQ is avaliable if it is overburden or not.

Another totally different thing would be that you make Working as Designed all starting garrison militias and fixed units to be disbanded in some days, or all garrison militias and fixed units to be disbanded in some days deployed till date XXXX, not having the ability to been attached to HQs to represent the difficulties for the government of first days of war or something like that. But at the moment we have a mix of garrison militias and other fixed units been able to be attached to HQs while others cant.

There are definitely two different types of units called nnn Guarnicion in the scenario files.

The first and the majority of them, like the Huelva Guarnicion, have start dates of 1 Jan 1936, so they are on the map for all of the scenarios that feature Huelva. They start the game with no HQ attached, but can be attached to an HQ. These appear to represent the paramilitary organisations like the MAOC that existed before the war broke out. These all appear to be withdrawn fairly early in the war, Huelva Guarnicion 15 Sept 1936.

The second like Jaen Guarnicion have start dates after the start of the war, many of them just days after. They arrive with no HQ attached and their Attached to status is fixed, so the button is disabled to prevent them being attached to an HQ. These appear to represent ad hoc units formed to fight against the rebels in the first days of the war. These units stay on the map a lot longer - Jaen Guarnicion will remain until Dec 1938, as long as they are not destroyed when Jaen is captured by the Nationalists.

We did have units in WITP where even if you were prepared to pay the political points, you couldn't change their HQ. But they did usually start with HQs (mainly in China IIRC). The difference was they were regular infantry units that were placed under Corps/Armies etc, not militias thrown together in the middle of a rebellion.

This appears to be as designed. Though it would be nice to have it explained in the Manual better, it says:

Page 221:
"HQ’s can be categorized as Static Restricted, Restricted or Unrestricted.
The effects of each category are as follows:
Static Restricted [S] – HQs, and some Land Units, are permanently
restricted. They will not be able to change their HQ type."

Page 241:
"Attached To – Shows the HQ that the selected unit is attached to. You can also change the HQ assignment unless the HQ is static restricted."

And the Jaen and some other Garrisons for the Republicans are indeed static restricted.

Something to point out about those garrisons. If they are "destroyed" the survivors will retreat and become mobile infantry units. They just need a little downtime for I & I and they should be fine to add to a defensive position.

Here is one with the name in the pink area, it adds a "#" to the regular name. The disband date continues to exist and it is in the blue area.
