Thresholds or "Unless" options for Fire Discipline

Post by DIVM »

I think it would be useful to add Thresholds for Fire Discipline or at the very least at "Unless" option.

Thresholds could work as a way to offset your fire discipline for the different kind of enemy units they might be facing (similar to how Fire Support has those thresholds for artillery groups). In this case, an infantry unit hiding in an urban area facing an open field could be set in Medium Range (2/3) but have a +1 threshold for whenever it knows the units are reccon units, for example. In that case it would engage in a +1 range (meaning from Medium range to Maximum range in this case). Or for example engage Tanks at -2 (in this case in Point Blank range), to avoid firing any small arms that would alert the enemy and wait till the range is most effective for those units. Of course, once that enemy unit attacks it, it would go back to maximum till that unit or itself is wiped out or out of range.

Another option would be having "Unless", to work in coordination with thresholds or without it. In the previous example, the infantry range could be set to "Maximum" unless it faces Tanks among the units.

These types of parameters may be more likely to be considered once we can add event scripting/triggers to the game. I will say we actively avoid having too many detailed parameters for firing, as there are many edge cases where bad behavior can occur. These ideas are noted, and we can revisit them in the future.

I get it, makes sense.
It's just painful having your troops well positioned just to have them blew up their own cover as soon as a Reccon unit passes by. I would rather have them hold fire in "low priority" units if they are just passing through 1-2km away and only start firing once the main battle units show up.
The only workaround now is changing Fire Discipline per turns, which isn't ideal. My other request is kind of a workaround for this.
