Division Size Units Not Moving

Post by Q-Ball »

I have had Division size units now for a couple months, and the behavior of these units is very odd.

1. They frequently will not move. This occurs over several turns; the attached screenshot shows a unit under a move order for more than a week. FUEL is fine. OP MODE is not an issue. It just doesn't move. This happens alot, and seems pretty random. Sometimes when you change the move order the unit starts to move, sometimes not.
2. Divisions will sometimes leave phantom units behind

The only fix is to break the unit apart and move the components, but then you lose the ability to recombine into Divisions

Is this a known issue?

You can break the units down so they will recombine. All that you have to do is to load the unit onto ships and it will unload as its component sub-units. Then you can move the various regimental units to a different hex, combine them into the regiments, and then you can have the divisional HQ still help the various regiments and smaller units within its command radius.

The question is is this working as intended?

Correct.....I realize I can break the unit down as a workaround, but does that mean we should NOT build Divisions?

Also, even the "Divide into Detachments" button does NOT work for division-size units, so the only way to break it down is through the Change OOB feature, and then permanently detach it from the Division

I don't think this is working as intended

Here is an example of the "Phantom Move" issue. I had the Carl Marx Division at Martorell (outside Barcelona), and moved it by rail to Logorno (near Vitoria.....Republic is making progress). For some reason, only the HQ elements moved, and left the rest of the division behind:

OK, fine.....so I'll go back to Martorell, and load those units, and send them to Logorno to re-combine. Only, they are not there.....it appears they are there from the AV, but as you can see the town is completely empty

The Division Unit is not fully functional; it is very buggy.

So I wanted to ask: Is this a known issue being addressed in the patch, or no?

Is anyone else experiencing these issues?

a potential work around (if feasible for you)

try this, load the division up on a transport taskforce and disembark it.

This should automatically break down any combined units where you would have to combine them again. This might preserve the ability to rebuild the division.

I'm sure that would work, but still begs the question: Is that as designed?

I think the preference is that Division-size units actually work. I don't actually care for this game, because even with borked Divisions I'm beating the stuffing out of the Nationalist AI. I'm more concerned about when I play a human.

Otherwise, I'd like the ability to build divisions to be disabled

To be clear, this never happens with Brigade or Regt-sized units; they always move and work just fine

Am seeing the same behavior. Nationalist campaign so it is the de Badajos Division de Infanteria. Combined with the Interdencia member it is showing a huge deficit in support squads and other elements. The Italian Frecce Nere Brigata Mista is showing the same but also missing mucho transport. Had to break that one down to transport by rail so methinks there are some stacking/transport limits that I could not find in the manual.

I won't venture a guess on WAD since that is beyond my pay grade. :)

Do you have saves and steps to reproduce that you could share with us?

Yes. How do I get you a save file? Where are the save stored?

I'll create a few more turns to create a trail, and point out certain units

To be clear, it's not always Divisions can't move, but it does happen periodically, and very randomly

Try reloading a save when this happens.

I have done the following to upload save files.

Look in the "save or load a game" menu for the wanted save. Save number is on the left side.

There is a save folder in your war in Spain installation folder. Copy out that save file to somewhere else and zip/compress it. My Windows 11 can do it natively.

You then just have to attach it and uploaded to one of your posts.

OK, attached are Games Saves from April 30 and May 1. I counted at least 5 Divisions that didn't move (a couple, like the one I have pictured here, have not moved in at least a week despite a standing order). Most, but not all, are Basque Divisions, but I have seen this behavior from non-Basque, so I don't think that's the reason.

I suppose anyone can take a look...so have at it, tell me I am nuts or doing something wrong

Here are the ones to look at:

1a Eusk at 102,60
4a Eusk at 102/56
1a Catalan/31a Division at 106,61 (unit renamed on May 1)
26a Sector/32a Div at 106,62
4a Div at 76,124

This unit pictured has been stuck for a couple weeks

Please let me know if you need more turns/saves, I have a few turns worth, and can generate more

So I wanted to ask: Is this a known issue being addressed in the patch, or no?
There was a known issue that came from rebuilding a parent when the childs already had move orders. The resulting conflict would split the unit into several hexes.
Patch 1 / version 51 does copy the parent move orders to all childs upon rebuilding.
If you see this issue with patch 1 still, then I'd like to know which unit did not move, and all the autosaves of the game in progress.
Then I can track if I missed a cause for this effect.

<<I suppose anyone can take a look...so have at it, tell me I am nuts or doing something wrong>>
Chances are I did something wrong. I will take a look at the respective units.
Thanks for the saves and the unit names. This will be helpful in checking them up.

Note: The game has an auto repair system for when parent units go to different hexes than the childs.
The unit locations are repaired on loading, the map display of power can still be wrong as it is build before the repair.
So if you save and then reload the units will at least be with their parents again.

For if the move is stuck: Try to cancel the movement for all by the button on the lower right and re-issue the move orders.
If the issue is carried over from Version 50 for these units, then the different move orders of the parent/childs might prevent the movement.
Reset the order should do in that case.

Alessandro, I am finding that re-issuing the order mostly works......there is a delay of course each time, but that does at least get the unit moving

My apologies, do you need additional saves? I can put a folder together with 50 if you like

I dont know exactly how to check it. But maybe you have some device too heavy to move with the logistic ( horse cars, trucks whatever) the unit have?

I think the above will be good to check for. They should tell me if the units have different move orders from the parent.
Thanks for those saves. Very good you did put them in your post along with the names of units I can check up.

I managed to get one stuck division moving by disbanding the HQ but I couldn't disband the other one. The disbanded HQ showed up at the location that the regiments moved to by strategic mode but it was not in strategic mode. I had tried moving the division my foot, then by strategic mode and it just wouldn't move. The other division that won't move will not let me disband the divisional HQ.
